5/29 GDT: Going for a series win against marlins

Kenley's reminding me a little of Billy Wagner in 2010 -- the core statistics are pretty dominant (Jansen had a 1.98 FIP coming into today's game), but things seem to keep going awry. It's not a perfect comparison, since Wagner had a 1.49 ERA that year, but I was always kind of bemused by the fact that Wagner was otherworldly good that season (13.5 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 2.10 FIP) and still blew seven saves.

Swanson's 2.1 fWAR is #1 among NL shorstops and only 0.1 behind the MLB lead. Overall he's tied for 5th best WAR in the NL. Can anyone say contract year?

Have to hope his BABIP reverses course

I’m not sure his underlying numbers look great for that. Over the past two seasons his percentage of hard hit balls has dropped while his medium and soft hit percentage have gone up. His strikeout rate is about the same over the last 3 seasons but each year his walk rate has dropped. Not sure it speaks well for his approach.

Baseball savant has him in 86th percentile in hard hit %, 91st in xSLG, 89th in barrels, and 19th in chase rate. If he cleans up his pitch selection, he'll be fine

I would almost wager that Swanson finds a West Coast home next year.

Why? I don’t think there are that many teams out west that are good fits for him.

Giants (Crawford)
San Diego (Tatis)
Texas (Seager)
Houston (Peña)
Seattle (Crawford)
Oakland (Lol)

Dodgers and Angels have their own free agents to prioritize, so it’s definitely possible I think they both would view Swanson as a plan B (or even C).

I could see Colorado and Arizona being interested in Swanson, but I don’t see why he would be interested in signing with those teams unless they offered him the most.

I still think it’s likely the Braves and Swanson work out an extension. Swanson isn’t the type who will attract huge offers in free agency. I don’t buy the Braves being in the market to shop in the tier above Dansby.

Something in the neighborhood of the Brandon Crawford contract for more years probably gets it done (four years 60 million)

You ask why? Simple answer: Girlfriend. Turner could move on, rumors about Tatis going to OF (?), LAA guy isnt getting it done IRRC.
