50+ murdered in Orlando terror attack

I son't know how old some of you are, but the state of modern education is worse than I thought, all you people can do is shift blame to the arguer and ignore their argument. None of you have any ideas. None of you have the ability to debate. it's really sad.

What argument, though? All you've done is make appeals to your own authority—just as rhetorically fallacious as ad hominem—and made sweeping and fairly uncritical protestations re atrocities in the name of god(s)—which, while not necessarily factually incorrect, is pretty deontologically misleading, historically simplistic, and a nice example of reductio ad my personal preoccupation.

Couldn't have said it better myself. ;-)

...Orlando marks the beginning of a new phase in our nation’s history: The worst mass-shooting on American soil is now an Islamist terror attack. Our country has to respond, and it will respond. I pray that those of you who have taken the time to read this will be a voice for responding to this tragedy with truth and love.

Something just doesn't sit right with me on this one. Guy had ties to a huge private security firm with easy access to guns and higher profile targets, but shoots up a gay night club? And conveniently is part of IS? Honestly the conspiracy alarm is running high.

lol, nice try....

I judge religion because it is evil. all one has to do is look at it's history of death, slavery, rape, violence... etc Belief and magical thinking make people do and say stupid things. It turns bad men into monsters and make good men do evil. Anything that is defined by blund adherence and rejects individual thought and criticism is inherently bad for society.

the good thing is, it's going extinct (at least in the western world) science and rational thought are winning. sadly, I won't live long enough to see it's demise, but I can dream about it. everything good done by religion can be done better by other, secular methods.

sigh........ I am a ****ing expert (as many athesits are, we tend to know more about religion than the proclaimed religious do) . ( And your logical fallacy noted)

Please name one evil event done in the name of atheism. Not for political reasons, or power reasons, but because "the lack of a god forces me to make this decision"

that's what I thought.

religion, by it's very nature, creates dogmatic, violent behavior. Millions have died IN THE NAME OF religion. nobody dies in the name of atheism.

and the funny thing is you tole ME, to read some history. Bitch I have forgotten more history than you will ever know. and physics, and astronomy, and pretty much everything else because I am a ****ing reading machine, brilliantly intelligent, and a master user of logic and critical thinking. and an arrogant ass who could care less what you peasants think.

Seriously, how is it, in the year 2016 that there are grown adults who believe an invisible sky wizard controls and created the world? It boggles the mind! We laugh at children and the easter bunny, or santa clause, but religion gets a free pass! why? it's equally silly, made up and nonsensical.

It brings comfort to people? sorry, only stupid people. #deathtoallreligion

I know grammar, this is the internet and I type real ****ing fast on an old keyboard with half the letters blacked out. if all you can do is attack me and not my ideas, that's an ad-hominem and is the sign of a simple mind (but I knew that already.)

and I'm sorry that you are out of your league, it's not my fault I put in the effort to learn these things.

You claim to be more evolved and less prone to evil and hatred, yet you are spewing nothing but hate, belittling everyone who disagrees, and are trying to make yourself seem superior to others.

And yet somehow your beliefs and morals are fundamentally different/superior to other religions?

Hopefully we can have a real fact-driven discussion in this thread and focus less on stale political positions.

I would love to say yes, but sadly I doubt it. We are so brainwashed as a nation to one extreme or another that Pavlov would be proud (I think, wait until the next bell goes off and I can tell you for sure) that we can't even agree on what day it is until we check with our "keepers".

Oh and wasn't all this NSA spying and snooping into our personal lives supposed to keep us safe from this sort of thing? Personally I don't feel safer, but that's just me. Oh and I saw some stuff from the shooter than he allegedly bragged about his stances and even maybe gave away what he was about to do on MySpace. Shouldn't that have been a clue? Nobody even uses freakin' MySpace any more, do they?

You are absolutely correct. I think an agnostic might be the closest to "no religion" as it gets. Everybody believes in something, even the total lack of anything, when taken to extremes is a belief in something.

Yeah, it all is in our definitions. And I think any definition worth its salt has to be able to encompass atheistic Buddhism on one end and full blown Trinitarian Christianity on the other. Which leads me to a broader, and less formal definition. And our poster most certainly (and agnostics and atheists of any stripe) would fall under it no matter how much they might stomp their feet in protest. "Homo religioso" or something to that effect. :-)

Yeah, good luck convincing ANY atheist of that though, and you know if that's their choice who am I to tell them they can't go that route. Certainly I don't agree with it/them but God created free will so they do get to exercise it.

By the way I saw an individual yesterday (a female) in a convenience store going out as I was waiting in line and I didn't pay much attention at first, then her LOUD green pants shocked me out of my late day stupor and I noticed they were pants with lots of pics of marijuana leaves on them, you know the symbol for pot if you see it stamped on anything. Then I noticed her shirt because of the 666 on it, then I saw a pentagram and some seriously fried hair in an unusual color as she was walking to her car, and I was expecting to see a 40 something (or more refugee from the 60s type) when she turned around. I see people who look like that all the time and I don't even think anything of it anymore, and I see the face of a kid who couldn't have been more than 16 if that, but she had that "hardened" face of a person who had not had an easy life. Now I'm condemning her for any of my aforementioned observations, it's everybody's own business what they look like, what they wear, and so on and it certainly isn't any of mine, but when I saw the face of this "child" it just really hit me, wondering what she had already been through in her life and it really saddened me as to the state of this world.

Maybe it's just me though, maybe she openly embraced that look and that lifestyle and is happy as a lark with it, but that wasn't what I saw when I saw her face.

if only the last 7 years of talk about Obama coming for the guns was true

maybe this wouldn't have happened

not the type of news you want to come back to when been off the grid not hearing any news of the outside world other than Ali dying

Chick Fil A fired opened up their stores on a Sunday so they could make free food and beverages for anyone who was standing in line to donate blood. I hadn't seen mention of it anywhere except my buddy in Orlando told me and I looked it up.

they clearly hate all gay people

Someone on my Facebook actually took it upon themselves to say Chic Fil A didn't deserve praise.

yes, this should topic should obviously go to talk about an organization that gives money to lobby for laws to not have everyone be viewed as equal under the law

nice to see them do something good. they do a lot of good/nice things it seems. These actions don't erase the actions they do on the other hand though

but again, please, let's talk about chick fil a instead

Since we were applauding those who were donating blood, I thought it'd be nice to applaud a business for helping that effort.

Should have known better... we can only boycott them and blast them when their founder has an opinion we don't like

Haven't you visited countries and spent money in countries where being gay is not only a crime but a death sentence? But you want to call chick fila out?
