Newk just doesn't look like a guy who's control problems are going to hurt him. As he tightens it up he willl get better and better. Still needs that change tho.

I thought Paul Byrd had some interesting insight on this topic. Byrd argued that Newk may benefit more by adding a cutter (or hard slider). I'd argue the changeup is the best pitch in baseball, but its probably the most difficult pitch to learn how to throw well.

Low key, Flowers' framing might have won the game tonight. I felt like he stole a number of pitches in deep counts.

He's been the best in baseball this year. +12.8 framing runs according to baseball prospectus and +17 according to statcorner. And in case anyone was wondering that number would put Flowers at +3 WAR on the season and make him a top 10 player in baseball. Pretty impressive.

That's awesome. It's ironic that he's become the player we all wanted to trade for to replace him (Lucroy).

He really has blossomed these past two years.

Good to hear good things from those that watched the game

I saw MLB tv highlights. Looked like Meyers hit one out. Sybarite hit one out that kemp caught. One k on a high fastball that was only 91.

Left handed just seem to play up velocity

Sounded like the walk was an 8 pitch walk.

Internsting that he's had this good of results and he's not really been as described in milb. Was he just trying to get promoted with radar gun numbers? Numbers were wrong?

Iirc we are measuring velocity different this year in MLB so everyone gets a mph or so extra. So he blew a high fastball by at what would have been 89-90

I know sd is bad and they k a lot but still

I really thought that Myers double was a homer. I was shocked they kept at a double. But great game from Newcomb. The Ks are great. I also really like how much weak contact he gets. Last night was probably the most hard contact I've seen him allow. But even last night he was getting a lot of grounders and pop-ups. So far guys haven't seen him well, which is carrying over from what we saw in his numbers in the minors.

Newcombs low BAA in the minors should have told us this is what he is. Kid looks great so far.

You sometimes have pitchers who see their walks drop when they jump to the majors because major league hitters are more aggressive on pitches in the zone. When you have good stuff this can induce some weak contact. In the minors you have guys who take quality pitches not because of skill but because they don't have a good eye. It's a bit counter intuitive and is not the norm but it does happen.

Maybe Newcomb is benefitting from that.

There are several reasons why newk is clicking right now.

1. Flowers is a beast at getting strikes
2. Better umps
3. Truth to what striker says
4. Maybe game planning has helped him just focus on his pitches and not how he is going to get the guy out.

Whatever it is. I haven't seen the mechanics just disappear like they have in the minors. I am really surprised at how good he has been.

Generally walk rates rise when a pitcher goes from AAA to the majors.

From what I've seen Newcomb has been throwing strikes. I'd say the credit belongs more to him than the change from facing AAA hitters to major league hitters.
