6/7 MINORS FINAL: Hoyt newst closer; look what Graham did!

With Mississippi losing close Shae Simmons to the majors in the middle of a hot pennant race, the Braves did not have to look far to find another door-slammer. James Hoyt, 27, who had been Simmons' set-up man, took over the closer role with equal success.

Hoyt, 6-5, 220, was leading the Southern League in holds by a wide margin, has saved three games since Simmons left, and is currently 2-2, 1.35 in 24 games with 37 strikeouts in 27 innings. This is merely picking up where he left off in 2013, where he appeared in 39 games combined for Lynchburg and Mississippi, going 3-3, 3.94 (2.48 in Miss.) with 105 strikeouts in 82 innings.

Where, you might ask, in the hell did he come from. The answer is, hell, aka the Mexican League. In 2012, he pitched for Tabasco, as well as Wichita in the A.A. and Edinburg in the NABL(!). He broke into the pros in the NABL as well, pitching for Yuma in 2011. The Braves signed him as a free agent in November of 2012. The world traveler calls Boise home, but played college ball for Centenary and Palomar (Calif.) College.

After going undrafted, he went to work repairing sailboats in San Diego. From there, he tells his story:

"I heard about an independent league tryout. Jose Canseco was there. He was coaching the Yuma (Arizona) Scorpions and they drafted me out of the work out." Hoyt finished a season with them. That club then folded prior to the start of the 2012 season so he moved to Texas to play for the Edinburg Roadrunners. Shortly after that he went north into Kansas to play for the Wichita Wing Nuts. He threw one shutout inning and then oddly, didn't pitch again for a week. At the end of that week a friend from Arizona helped get his name out and as a result, Hoyt was signed by Tabasco. That's where he caught his big break: "I had a great time down there. I wouldn't be where I am now if I wouldn't have taken that chance and gone," Hoyt said.

Braves scout (not credited in the media guide) signed him after watching him put up a 2.02 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 13 innings.

SHORT-SEASON

DSL Angels @ DSL Braves (3-3), No Report.

ROSTER MOVES:

AAA: Andy Simunic signed as FA, assigned to Gwinnett. OF Derek Mitchell demoted to Mississippi. Todd Cunningham on 7-day DL (thumb sprain), Joe Leonard promoted to Gwinnett from Miss.

ADV.A: Tyler Tewell back onto DL; Anthony Nunez promoted to Lynchburg.

Wichita Wing Nuts is a hilarious name for a baseball team based on a phrase coined by Kansas native son Bob Dole. I'm sure he got a chuckle out of that.

Tyler Tewell back onto DL.

Any word on the injury? He left the game after a HBP and next day tweeted "worst day." Hope he is ok. He is having a good season. One of those under-the-radar prospects that only us minor league geeks know about.

Fridays BA Hot sheet:

12. Jose Peraza, 2b, Braves
Jose Peraza
Team: high Class A Lynchburg (Carolina)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .367/.375/.667 (11-for-30), 5 R, 1 2B, 4 3B, 5 RBIs, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 HBP, 3-for-3 SB

The Scoop: Perhaps Tommy La Stella shouldn’t get too comfortable in Atlanta, not with the hard-charging Peraza now playing second base full time and hitting like crazy in the Carolina League. To that last point, Peraza leads the CL with 80 hits and 28 steals (in 34 tries), while ranking third in the batting race at .328. Thanks to eight triples, the righthanded hitter trails only Joey Gallo in total bases.

If we do end up locking up our OF do you think we could get by playing both TLS and Peraza at 2b/3b? Who goes to 3b?

Given he has played a lot of short, I would guess Peraza is the more versatile of the two. He also has the speed to play center.

From the very thorough News & Advance:
The injury to Tyler Tewell seems to be worse than manager Luis Salazar initially thought. Tewell was placed on the disabled list today retroactive to June 4 with a right toe injury after he was hit by a pitch on the foot during the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Pelicans.

Peraza actually has the arm to play 3B and he has very good range. With Simmons and Peraza on the same side of the diamond that would be ridiculous. I'd love the look of this lineup as well.

Peraza - 3B

La Stella - 2B

J. Upton - LF

Freeman - 1B

Gattis - C

Heyward - RF

Simmons - SS

B.J. Upton - CF

One can only dream!

I have so I've seen his arm strength and range. He could definitely handle 3B if he was put there.

I've seen him play too and I agree, but I still would love to see him and Simmons turning double plays with him at second. But if La Stella's bat proves enough to make up for his defense I could see Peraza at third short-term (maybe a year or two).

Heyward 6th

I think its going to be real hard for Heyward to not bat in the top 2 for the rest of his career. He seems to really embrace that role.
