If a team thinks that Grili is more valuable because he pitches the 9th inning vs the 8th inning, then I will find that to be dumb.
Just my $0.02

Same basic stats. Closer and 8th-inning guy. Who do you want on the team?
I think a proven successful closer has way more perceived value than a successful 8th inning guy. There have been tons of cases in the past decade where a devastating setup guy struggles with the pressure when he gets a 9th inning/closer gig. Whether the value is actually significantly more... like you said, maybe not... but I think the perceived value is definitely quite a bit more.
Well I wouldn't care. Because I think saves are meaningless.
We've seen tons of great 7th- and 8th-inning guys completely fall to pieces when handed the 9th inning.
Right... but we've also seen Grilli not fall apart.
But he is coming off surgery at nearly 40. If the Braves don't make him the closer, most teams will assume it's because they don't think he can handle it.
What's there to handle? If he's dominating the 8th inning, what's the difference? Unless you think the Achilles injury killed his psyche
If so... it's silly. It's absolutely meaningless.
Clearly it isn't absolutely meaningless.
You're saying clearly but there isn't much evidence to support anything.
Jim Johnson got basically nothing for us.
I have no idea how you are quantifying his return by itself, but this is incorrect.
Well if he is was responsible for any of the non-Olivera side of the trade, then it makes it that much worse
This is complete nonsense.
Paco, Bird, and a first round pick? For a reliever on a one year deal? Any of those CLEARLY out weigh what JJ was worth and its not close.
Calm down. Either way you slice it Hart got played like a fool. If Johnson was responsible for much of the talent brought back, then he severely undervalued Wood/Peraza. If Johnson wasn't responsible for much, then that was my point...
