8/20... trying to avoid sweep to reds

I was talking about how every Braves pitching prospect is touted as throwing mid/upper 90s, and then averages 91-93 when they debut for the Braves.

Come on man...Newk was throwing 102 in one of his starts this year :)

Indeed. But if you can't locate at all the better velocity matters.

This is a very interesting topic, analyzed here: http://www.hardballtimes.com/the-relative-importance-of-velocity/

If you don't want to read the whole thing, here a summary...

Fastballs - location is 2x-3x more important than velocity, but velocity is 1.5x-2x more important than movement. However, you can't teach velocity, just like you can't teach raw power or make a basketball player taller.

Curves - importance ranks velo, vertical movement, location, then horizontal movement.

Sliders - importance ranks location (down), horizontal movement (away) and velo last.

Change - keeping it down is by far the most

Important aspect covered in this analysis, but common sense tells us the velo delta must approach 8-10 MPH, and the delivery must match the delivery of the FA.

Its going to be sooooo frustrating watching Newk the next 2+ years. He's really tip toeing at an inflection point of being a terrible starter or a TOR pitcher.

At first glance all of that makes sense. I'd even suspect Joe Simpson would agree with that.

Newk keeps missing armside. Almost certainly a release point issue. Those are fixable but the question is whether he'll fix it.

I was actually very surprised that velo was the most important aspect of a curve.

I was also surprised that location wasn't the most important aspect of all pitches considering how evil "hanging breaking balls" are considered.
