8/23 TUESDAY MINORS FINAL: Rome hot, Mississippi not

I am not sure if it is a pattern, but we always comment on Newcome's high walk total, but this game he walked 3 in the last 1.1 inning. 3/4 of his walks came after ~80 pitches. The reason I noticed is that we had this same kind of discussion a few starts back when he pitched great and gave up 2 walks in his last inning.

Is it possible that he is "getting it" but when he starts to tire out, he loses his mechanics? Has anyone watched him in person?

I've seen someone bring this up ion the past before too. Would be interesting to dig in and see if this is indeed the pattern...walks late in the game.

Newcomb vs sims in AA...

Newcomb (age 23)...

3.91 era 129.0 ip 106 h 56 er 68 bb 138 k .228 avg 1.35 whip

Sims (age 22)...

2.45 era 77 ip 48 h 21 er 49 bb 87 k .185 avg 1.26 whip

Which one has higher ceiling?

Stat scouting sucks all by itself. I've posted numerous scouting reports on Sims and they still hold true. With Newk its walks, Sims too. Difference is, Sims tended to have Whalen-esque innings if someone got a hit. Confidence shot. He's better than before but it rears its head a lot. I don't think its a wide gap, but it's Newk slightly for me.

Newcomb also has less pro experience and is left handed. Overall package a little higher upside. I think he probably would help himself by getting in better shape, but maybe it has nothing to do with it. couldn't hurt.

I just went over Newcomb's game logs for his last 10 starts, during which he has walked 29 batters. Here is the breakdown by inning:

1st: 8

2nd: 5

3rd: 4

4th: 1

5th: 3

6th: 5

7th: 3

Unfortunately, it looks like he is just consistently wild, and it appears to have nothing to do with fatigue late in the game.

His strike to pitch % has been above 60% in every game since his debacle of .2 innings except for this last start.. I think that was 58%. He has been trending better, but still needs to stop running deep counts. He has only gone over 6 innings in 2 games I think. Those are the things I look for. I also think teams learned from the first meetings. He always seemed to fair worse the second time he faced an opponent.
