8/3/2015 MONDAY MINORS FINAL ... Lowdown on Thurman; G-Braves win 9th of 10

I think he has an outside shot of becoming a starting major league catcher. But if we want to build a contending team, we shouldn't make that kind of assumption. I'm happy to pencil him in as our backup catcher and if he forces the manager to play him more that's great.

Yeah, I'm just not sure we'll ever know unless we give him a legit shot and extended playing time. No time better than now, IMO.

Bethancourt likely catches more than half the games after the September call-ups and while it's difficult to judge on September performance, I think the Braves will be able to discern if he is improving in the mental/preparation part of the game from greater exposure.

Catchers get hurt a lot. At some point, every backup gets a shot to show what he's got. Gattis got his shot because McCann was out for a while in 2013 recovering from the shoulder operation.

I think it takes more than a month, especially as a September call-up, to see what a player's got. I just hope that we don't give up on him. Even if he ends up being a backup catcher, there is value in that.

I keep saying that. Good post.
