8/4/15: Giants (Peavy) vs Braves (Miller): Freddie back onto DL

6 runs in 2 innings pathetic if we are supposed to be competitive in 16 the pen needs to be taken care of. Just curious why no interest in eof? He was dfa by Oakland

Well some bullpen options are in the minors/hurt (Shae, Withrow, maybe Banuleous, Grilli)

Our bullpen might be as hard to fix as our offense. Going to be a bumpy rebuild. Mukaki!

I think the bullpen will be fine next year. I assume that Grilli will be back and effective. Viz is showing that he could be a potential closer down the road. I like what I've seen with Mckirahan and I think Detwiler should be brought back next year as well. Braves will sign a few arms in the offseason and someone will come up from the minors.

The offense will need to be worked on for sure though.

You are way too optimistic regarding Grilli, in my opinion. Dude will be almost 40 trying to recover from surgery.

But not an arm injury. The body doesn't shrivel up and die at 40. With modern medicine he will recover. If it was an arm injury I might be more inclined to agree with you.

Even so, it's April at the earliest, meaning he will probably be out until June. And 40 is old as **** in baseball years again, now that Bartolo is hogging all the steroids.

Relief pitching is pretty easy to fix, but it's not a huge priority in rebuilding years. Losing Johnson and Grilli hurt, but these growing pains are also valuable and solid options for the future will rise to the top.

Would anyone have any interest in bringing jj back?

That's true but in regards to thethe's main point, which is that the bullpen will be ok, I agree with him. We've got a lot potential there next season.

I don't know why people are worried about the pen. We are going to add several power arms next year like Shae Simmons, Chris Withrow, and Paco Rodriguez.

Yep. Here are the potential bullpen arms we have for next year even if we add no one:
Vizcaino
Simmons
Rodriguez
Withrow
Grilli
McKirihan
Hursh

Also could see Banuelos and/or Folty there at various points as well. We might sign another piece, but that has the potential makings of a good pen.

Exactly. I also think they are oging to take it slow with Simmons and bring in a veteran arm or two for the pen. After 2014 the Braves are going to be big on veteran presence at all levels of the major league team. Grilli will be one of those guys but I would expect another 30+ year old guy with 6+ years of experience to be brought in.

Presumably Winkler will also be in the pen. In addition, we are likely to acquire one greybeard reliever for grit leadership and all that jazz.

Yep, Lot of power arms and potential for the pen even if we sign no one. Pen will be one of the better in the league if injuries don't bite too hard.

Marksberry has come out of nowhere and he looks like someone who might grow into a contributor as well.

Cabrera and Kinman are also two guys who are moving up.

If you add some veteran presence to the equation, I think there will be enough arms to put something together. The big question will likely be whether or not Vizcaino can develop into a reliable closer. If that happens, it's a lot easier to construct a bullpen backwards from him.

Weber has some nice numbers at AAA, but not sure if those are just career years or he has turned a corner.
