9/1 THURSDAY MINORS FINAL: MALLEX REHABS!

Albies is a beast. Gonna be some interesting decisions with Ender and Mallex in the offseason. I don't see both in the same outfield bc both has the most value as a CF.

I imagine one of them will be used to help acquire a long term solution for 3b, C or a SP.

I love Ender as a player (he's one of my favorite players to watch, one of those guys who consistently makes winning plays) but if we're willing to make a risk we should package him with a high level pitching prospect to get another good pitcher. I'm willing to take the risk with Mallex, I think he's going to be solid.

I think Ender is moved. Not because they have more faith in Mallex, but because we could probably fetch a really solid player in a deal that involves him.

The problem, though, is that Ender IS a really solid player. You could argue we're better with a really solid player at 3B, for example, than CF or RF, but if we trade Ender, I want to get a potential stud in return. If we have to also include a prospect or two, fine, but just getting a 'really solid' player in return, to me, doesn't move us forward.

I agree. Mallex missing time with injury hurt his stock. Ender being on fire the 2nd half increased his stock.

Now 6 homers for little Albies. Showing real pop. Not crazy to think he could hit 10-15 homers in a couple years.

I agree about Ender. He is a really solid player so trading him for a really solid player doesn't work. He is a spark plug in the lead off spot and a beast in CF. it would be really hard for me to trade him.

I agree, completely. A .287 AVG with a .349 OBP from maybe the best defensive centerfielder in the game is amazing. If it wasn't for the fact that we have a lot of good players, then I'd think we are insane to let him go.

Actually, we are. I trade Mallex before Ender. lol

Correct. The return for Ender needs to be such that Mallex plus that guy is better than Ender plus a veteran FA guy like Prado (focusing on 3B just for this example).

If we assume Ender plus Prado will produce 5-6 WAR next year, and Mallex is a 2-3 WAR guy next year, then the return for Ender needs to be for a guy who is at least a 3-4 WAR player with equal or more team control to Ender's.

The most obvious trade target in that sense is Baez since the Cubs will need a leadoff CFer after Fowler leaves, and Baez should be a 3-4 WAR guy over a full season with the potential for 4+ WAR.

I'm not sure if the Cubs are still interested in Ender, and there are obviously other potential targets for the Braves, but this should be the general line of thinking if Ender is traded. The time for trading Ender for 2 pitchers in AA is over.
