9/25 Report: Marlins Fernandez found dead on boat; game cancelled

This is sad to hear, Fernandez was a great pitcher and a real ace at only 24 years old. My condolences to his family and friends, Jose will be missed!

when people say the "Braves way" this picture says it all to me

there is José like "are you ****ing kidding me? this is a game and we should have fun with it!"

the baseball world and world itself really lost a great one today

Wow, heard he announced his girlfriend was pregnant 5 days ago. This is going to be remembered for a long time.

As a father, this is what hit hardest to me. That and the smile he always had on his face, which usually wasn't good news for us. A lot of people like to gripe about how players shouldn't ever be sad or irritated because they get to play baseball for a living. No one could ever accuse Jose Fernandez of that. He oozed energy. This blow will be felt for a long time.

People please, wear seat belts when driving, wear helmets on motorcycles, wear life jackets on boats. We do not need to hear tragedies like this that can be avoided if we do the necessary steps to preserve life.

He didn't die from drowning, he died from the crash.

How can you die from a crash unless you are traveling at a high rate of speed into a rocky structure you can't see. At 3 in the morning, not smart. Sorry, but this can be avoided to anyone. Common sense is a factor in things like this.

If you want to live dangerously that is on you. He should not be dead, crash or drown, doesn't matter, it could have been avoided as he has too much to live for.

I think he was just referring to the specific mentioning of wearing life jackets.

I liked Jose Fernandez, but I also had no issue with the way we reacted to that situation. Just because a guy is smiling and having fun doesn't mean he was in the right.

I like players that love to play the game and have fun while doing it. But I also don't like a lot of the things that have now become pretty commonplace, like bat-flipping, walking to 1st on a HR, pitchers going nuts after a K, etc. There's having fun, then there's being a tool.

Thank you.

The only way you can die is from an explosion or blunt force trauma which can happen at high speeds in a rocky area they know.

Life jackets can save you in other situations.

Cy 31 said it was accident and this death could not have been prevented.

Shame at that age and daughter on the way.

RIP Jose

sometimes there is crying in baseball

You said to me it was not by drowning but an accident and I said they weren't wearing life jackets. I did not know they slammed into a jetty at a high rate of speed and you were correct. They died in the boat, not in the water and nothing could have prevented it.

Can we not debate the kid's death? Seriously guys. If there's more that changes it, then I think could be discussed, but Jesus Lord.

I don't know how many of you saw the pregame of the Mets/Marlins game tonight. Was a bit tough to watch. Video montage while a trumpet player did "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". After that, the two teams shared handshakes and hugs. Reminded me of the Braves and Mets in the first game in New York after 9/11. The Marlins then went to the pitchers mound and wrote in the dirt, then gathered behind the mound. Giancarlo Stanton encouraging the team, while choking tears back. Martin Prado was having a hard time getting through it.
