Aardsma up; Martin down

The Braves will call up David Aardsma from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Aardsma just signed with Atlanta over the weekend after opting out of his minor league deal with the Dodgers. The 33-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013 as a member of the Mets. He has a 2.29 ERA and 25/7 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season.

Braves optioned RHP Cody Martin to Triple-A Gwinnett.

The move clears the way for David Aardsma to join Atlanta's bullpen. Martin started the season strong, but his recent struggles have brought his ERA up to 5.40 for the year.

Its unfortunate how quickly Martin tumbled this year. Hopefully a move to the starting rotation will help him long term.

Looking forward to see a capable bullpen arm though.

I don't know how you fix Martin unless he adds pitches. Typically when young pitchers struggles it is with command, but he has no issues there. I just don't think he has enough stuff to be a major leaguer.

Martin's dreadful performance will have to be blamed on Fredi somehow. Didn't use him enough, used him too much, put him in a position to fail (I love that one-how do you avoid that-leave him in AAA?). The boys here will come up with something.

Why isn't McDowell ever mentioned when discussing our bullpen failures?

Because McDowell has been responsible for putting together elite bullpens with non proven, raw arms in the past. You can't expect anyone to have success with a pen full of guys that are garbage and have always been garbage (outside of JJ and Grilli who have done as well as reasonably can be expected.)

Yeah. I'm just going to say that Fredi stinks. That good enough? Or how about, Fredi is a bullpen killer. :FrediWut:

I hope Martin makes it back. Must be rough to start so strong and fall so quickly.
Still haven't heard a reason for his first send down

It's why I urge caution with all of these guys. Teams scout other teams. Opposing teams watched what Martin was doing and how he was approaching hitters and built the book on him. Now it's Martin's turn to make adjustments.

I feel bad for the kid because I don't think Fredi figured out how to use him and over-used him as a result. My guess is they try to stretch him out by putting him back in the rotation at Gwinnett. He may not have enough raw stuff to be a high-leverage reliever and that's the role the Braves seemed to want him to fill at this point.

Martin is not a reliever. His strengths all come from command and stamina. He was misused, but I certainly wish he would've responded better.

From what I read here, Martin had no variety of pitches.
If that was the case, him starting would have been an even worse disaster

I still have hope for Martin, but this move is—at the moment—nonetheless pretty inarguable.
