AJSS Has A Torn UCL

Man that's a tough blow for him and the team. So he will miss pretty much all of 26 also. Lopez when he comes back probably needs to be a high leverage reliever with the shoulder problems.

I don't know where Snitker fits in this whole thing. Smith-Shawver throws very hard and his arm blew up. Unless I am missing something, he didn't throw another pitch after the pop.

Think the criticism is we left AJSS in after the ball off the ankle, which some believe led to overcompensation by AJ which destroyed his elbow

I agree with Cy more than you. I haven't looked at the Statcast data (I rarely do), but did his velocity dip after the ball off the ankle? If it did, then Snitker should share in the blame. The player has to dictate his condition to the staff in these instances. There's the old adage that "you hurt the team when you minimize an injury."

I'm not standing up for Snitker here. I'm generally slow to the punch when ending a manager's tenure is on the table, but once I reach the point of no return I'm as vigorous as his most ardent anti-fans in thinking he should go and it's now time.

When I said the Braves couldn’t afford to have both Holmes and AJSS in the rotation this is not what I had in mind. It should be noted that increases in velocity are a very reliable predictor to blowing out an elbow.

I didn’t watch the AJSS outing, but the statcast data suggests to me the injury occurred during the Stott PA. He went from throwing 97-99 with 2130 rpm to suddenly 94 with 2000 rpm, which is a textbook indication of injury. It looks like he was only allowed to face Turner while injured, so it’s not like he went half an inning with a blown elbow.

Who noticed and took action can’t be determined from the statcast data, but it should have been obvious during the Turner PA.

3 fastballs prior... 96.7, 97.5, 95.8
3 fastballs after...95.9, 94.7, 94.2 (last pitch)

Being young and his first TJ I think the all star break 2026 is a good bet. Since he already had control issues he might need the remainder of that year in the minors. I could see him starting rehab starts this time next year and back in Atlanta about August. Lopez I agree should come back as a reliever. A multi inning reliever imo. I do doubt AA will ever sacrifice the potential for a top of the rotation starter for a reliever though. I would like to see Lopez used as a multi inning reliever next year targeting 100 IP.

Spot starters are huge these days so if we can get 2 good SP in the offseason that would put Holmes and Lopez in the bullpen and have 2 very good guys that can spot start when we need them and be high leverage relievers. With the way we've chased Cease the last several years I'll be really surprised if AA doesn't loosen the purse strings and sign him this offseason.
