must have a pretty good history for losing a 5-inning pitcher (who's never hit 3 fWAR, btw, even tho WAR loves Wood's average, 5-IN) and a super-sub to be among the worst moves in history.
 
and if that's somehow "among the worst moves in franchise history," then making probably one of the best trades in baseball history kinda makes up for it, don't ya think? or does that not count?

Billy Butler signed for 3/30 at age 28. He can't play defense, run the bases, or hit for power. ****ty deal.
Nick Markakis, though? Signed for 4/44 at age 31. He plays execrable defense at an important position, can't run or hit for power.

For some reason you'll defend the latter.

I agree with this. The Olive Era was the pits, but it was a not a huge, franchise-crippling move, and Coppo should get credit for the big entry on the other side of the ledger.

Markakis is a good bit better than Butler and wasn't coming off a negative fWAR season. Getting him for $1M more AAV is pretty good in comparison. And I've said I wasn't a big fan of the Markakis deal from the start, but I could see the logic in it. That's about as far as I ever went in support of it.

Your brightside capabilities are truly amazing.

This lackluster guy is marginally better than that lackluster guy, and he only costs $1M more per year! That's a hell of a value!

Butler was at -0.7.
In what world is that "marginally" better?
Last 3 years, combined: -1.8 and 3.6.

There is a decent chance that Nick's average WAR over the lifetime of his contract is just as bad as Buttlers is. I mean Nick is on pace for a -1.2 WAR season right now. Both suck and were stupid contracts.
 
Much rather have neck than Butler, but not sure what that has to do with anything.

Other things I don't understand.... The same exact points/views have been expressed on this for a full year now. Not sure what else there is to say or add or why people are?

Heyward is on pace for 1.2 WAR at $23M.

Fair enough. Perhaps "marginally" was a poor choice of words. Still, signing a guy who unequivocally sucks versus signing an older, more expensive guy about whose suckage there is a bit of debate? Not really where you want to be.

With pretty much all of that coming from his defense. He has been an offensive black hole this year. I'm absolutely SHOCKED that Joe Maddon isn't getting the best out of him.
 
Regarding the Olivera deal, it does look better if Wood struggles or gets hurt.

Obviously nobody is rooting for that, but it would mean that the Braves correctly pegged Wood as someone who's value would likely go down if they held onto him.

He starts slow almost every single year and we read the same thing around mid may to June ish.

I thought there was a decent chance that we would get last year's version of Nick for the majority of his contract as it appeared that his style of play would age okay with a slight chance for improved power.

That doesn't seem to be the case. Negabraves win another one, I suppose.

He's probably whispering stats in his ear while he sleeps at night. Maybe if Maddon trusted his gut more, Heyward would be able to catch up to a fastball.

Certainly. It's also 2 months in for a guy who has a pretty solid track record. None of which has anything to do with the two previously discussed vets who are on the wrong side of their career with declining stats.

With the Braves time table for contention and the stock piling of arms it made sense to trade Wood. It didn't make sense to trade for HO.
