@Gondeee: According to one of my MLB sources, Braves top draft pick LHP Kolby Allard had surgery on his back after he was shut down in GCL this year.

@Gondeee: Allard apparently had two vertebrae fused in his back. He was already a high-risk, high-reward pick, now leaning more toward the risk side.

This guy is pretty damn credible. So, that sucks. It depends on the surgery of course, but any sort of back surgery is scary.

Not good news, but Allard is expected to be ready before ST, so the sky isn't falling.

Confirmed @gondee's report that Kolby Allard had back surgery after the GCL season. The #Braves say Allard will be ready at start of ST

@mlbbowman
A #Braves official said Allard's most recent surgery was not as significant as the one that had been performed on his back earlier this year

The part about him being more risk now is just gondee's opinion.

Back surgery is not ideal, but fusion is a fairly low-risk surgery, and it should relieve any pain he had. The only concern is a slight reduction in back flexibility, but one fusion is not likely to matter that much.

I don't really see this as increased cause for concern. The back was a concern and still is, but this surgery should help, not hurt.

Didn't Huddy have a similar surgery back in 2011? He came back OK for 2012, and he was in his mid-30s.

Yeah, he did. The fact that Allard is having this at such a young age is actually more cause for concern...but this surgery itself shouldn't affect much. The only reason for continued concern is if this signals a tendency for back issues is someone so young. But if this solves his issue, he should be fine.
