It's ridiculous, but at least for Newcomb and Touki, there's precedent in their minors walk rates (about 17%). Wright had a 11% walk rate in the minors, and has a 30% walk rate as a starter in the majors. That one is baffling.

It seems I've said it about a million times (but that's impossible because I don't have a million posts), but the minor leagues and the major leagues are in completely different galaxies. MLEs can be somewhat instructive, but a lot of times skills don't readily translate to performance as a player gets to the majors.

As for Foltynewicz, it could be a number of things. He's always been on the intense side, so whatever issues he's had could be related to that.

Well if we can get Folty back pitching any where close to what we expected of him that would be huge. Then if either Anderson or Hamels can be solid as the 3 then we can have a rotation that would give us a chance to be competitive in the post season. It really is a shame Soroka went down.

Or maybe he chooses not to share it because it could be a sensitive issue?

Perfectly acceptable if that's the case. The point is that the rumors will continue to float and the questions will continue to linger as long as it's not addressed. If it's so personal that he chooses to keep it to himself and put up with the questions that's certainly understandable. Just say so and I'd guess most people will cut him some slack and leave him alone.

Athletic article with lots of quotes from AA. He talks about the guys in Gwinnett some. Mentioned Wright has had two good starts and is getting more downward movement on his slider. The thing that made me mad is they said they are starting Wright Wed in Gwinnett to see if he can do three good ones in a row. In what world is Wright not better than Erlin?

Is there any chance we retain Folty for next season? Basically what I'm getting at is, how much would have to go right here for us to even consider it.

Seems like the price tag he would receive in arbitration would be too high to justify the risk.

The world where Wright walks 5 guys in a row. The world apparently hasn't changed that much yet. They've watched him make those starts and don't believe he's better yet.

Being frustrated is understandable - saying that someone should be starting at this level against even better hitters is a little stupid when they've seen those guys pitch for a month and we haven't. Calling for Davidson and Muller is even more comical - I'd bet that people here haven't seen them pitch more than 5 times in their minor league careers. YouTube highlights are just that - highlights - how often has anyone seen videos of their duds?

Folty will not get a big raise in arbitration next year if it comes to that. After 2019 his salary only went up by 1 million. Going through the process again I could see something around 8 million.

Personally if the Braves do want him back I see them offering him a low base salary for 2021 with incentives and an option for 2022.

Erlin is trash. Wright has upside. Let Wright get better like we let Riley get better.

I would be fine starting Weigel or Davidson over Wright. I do not understand Erlin's role on this team.

Erlin is a has been that my phone doesn’t even like when I type his name. I would rather about 10 guys get a start over him. We are rolling with this group in the playoffs might as well let them learn in real games, not some controlled environment sim game with no consequences.

I don’t buy this confidence crap. If you aren’t already confident by just pitching in the bigs. Then you don’t belong there anyway.

Rule of thumb for sports (or pretty much any competitive enterprise): when you have two guys who suck, and one has upside and the other doesn't, you always go with the guy who has the chance to get better.

Unless of course the zero upside guy has a hot wife he's willing to share with you, is slipping you money under the table, or can blackmail you in some way.

The least sexy explanation for prospects not playing is that they aren't ready yet.

I sort of don't care if they are or aren't. I'd rather see a couple innings of Davidson or Weigel than Robbie Erlin. What difference could it really make?

I'd agree..but I'm also still in my feeling about not playing Pache with an inferior player standing in the way. This season is an anomaly. I can't imagine a full season of this type of bs would be the norm. That said...the Braves are in first. They clearly know better than us.

Erlin and Milone. Both are batting practice guys at this point.

Much rather see Matzek starting with Tomlin. At least those guys can get people out and keep games close. Neither are likely to ever be 6 inning guys on a regular basis. But, at least you can get to the 4th still in the game. Call them openers if you wish. Or, if you are a traditionalist, call them starters keeping in the back of your mind that they should never see the third time through and maybe not a complete second time through in some cases.

You've got Minter, Dayton and Smith to cover LH relief. Bringing in guys who should be selling a set of white walls is just dumb.

Damn. Not white walls....lol

Serious question here - when was the last time "upside" got an MLB hitter out? Seriously.

I'm just as frustrated watching Erlin and Tomlin go out there as everyone else is - honestly. I can afford to *itch and moan about it because I'm a fan - AA and Snitker don't have that luxury. Not only are they held accountable by ownership, they're also accountable to the players in the clubhouse.

This team is a contender right now. Freeman has two years left on his contract. They went out and spent a whole lot of money to bring in guys like Hamels, Ozuna, Melancon, Smith, Martin, and Greene to win NOW. AA and Snitker owe it to ownership and the players to put people on the field that are at least ready to compete at the MLB level. There's simply no time to let Folty/Newk/Wright/Touki/Wilson/Anderson/etc. "figure things out" at this level at this point. Those guys (other than Anderson) were absolutely getting their teeth kicked in to the point that even an offense as good as the one we have couldn't bail them out even if it was hitting on all cylinders.

Folty and Newk are the two guys out of that group that we're fairly sure are just such headcases that they may not be capable of making adjustments or responding if they take some time to go down and make some adjustments. The younger guys just don't have enough experience to be able to make the needed adjustments right after a visit to the mound - or even from start to start YET. When things go bad for them it gets in their head and they just make things worse.

I hate watching Erlin and Tomlin go out there as bad as everyone else does because you know it's just a matter of time before other teams get to them, but at least they know how to get through 3-5 innings and hold other teams to 5 runs - our offense can overcome that fairly often. Folty/Newk/Wright/Touki were putting us in holes so deep that the offense had no chance, and apparently the other guys at Gwinnett haven't done enough to make AA and Snitker think they're ready to at least give the offense a chance.

But they don't know. The last 3 games Wright pitched he went 3.1, 6 and 3 innings. Erlin has gone 4, 4 and 4. It's basically the same. Wright has a chance to be better.

The Pache vs Inciarte is a different issue for me. Inciarte has real money due this year and next year. Pache is a guy where the offense is almost all projection. I am willing to wait and have Pache's 27 or 28 year old year controlled when he might have grown into his potential.

Erlin was dropped by the pirates. He makes no money.

Davidson should either be good enough to be better than erlin or expendable in trade.

They "know" what they see because they actually see the workouts and scrimmages happening in Gwinnett - when was the last time you attended one of them?

You're completely missing the point - "they" see Wright, you don't. Apparently he hasn't shown them enough for them to believe he's ready to give the big club more than Erlin just yet - that's why AA said he wants to see Wright have at least one more solid outing. He didn't say that that change may not be happening soon. Erlin's next start is tomorrow night in Fenway - they haven't seen enough to make them believe Wright is ready to take that start. He said they want to see if Wright looks good again since he was already scheduled to pitch in the scrimmage today - assuming he looks good again, there's no reason not to expect him to take Erlin's place next Monday at home against the Marlins.
