Arcia Extended

It's OK for WS contenders to have mediocre players at a couple positions. That's all Arcia is...a mediocre player being paid as such. That's literally why he was acquired...to be the mediocre Plan B.
Arcia signed the deal

Arcia doesn’t sign that if he thinks he’s a starting ss, or starting anything.

Looks like Braves and Arcia don’t think he’s a long term starter

LF is a bigger concern than SS imo. You cant have 9 all stars in your lineup realistically speaking. Arcia is more than fine for SS until someone better comes across. Sure i guess AA could upgrade at the deadline, but the lineup is more than fine with him. My dream is getting Joc at the deadline if SF falls out of it.

He's hitting .316/.350/.526 with a .870 OPS, obviously he wont hit like that all year. But he's been way more than fine so far.

LF will be solved by Grissom and I believe Rosario has a bounce back to at least be an average player.

We need grissom up though. He is ready.

Grissom probably doesnt have the glove to stick at SS, he does need to cross train and play some LF. I wish i had the same confidence in you as Rosario.

If Griss could play LF, he could be very valuable to the team. He could realistically play 3-4 days a week by letting him play SS when Riley gets a day off/DH.... Play SS when Arcia gets a day off/DH.. play 2b when Ozzie gets dayoff/dh, Then time in LF and DH himself.

One thing I think this team is missing is a back up 1B and RF. I wouldn't mind seeing Acuna get some DH days and I guess Pilliar or Hilliard patrol RF.. not sure who plays 1B though..

It's going to be interesting how they handle Grissom in Gwinnett. Do they keep him at SS 75%-80% of the time with 2B being the only other position he plays or do they move him around the diamond a bit (OF/3B/1B)? He's young and one often doesn't see a younger player turned into a multi-position guy as it can detract from their overall development. He's ripping it with the bat right now in AAA, but if they don't think he is the everyday SS, I imagine he stays there until they are satisfied with his defense.

Grissom seems to be showing power in AAA. His knock last year was his lack of exit velocity. Let's hope this is real and not a mirage.

I just doubt he has the arm to play 3B. LF is an option, probably the easiest transition. But with rasorryio, he would basically be the short side of a platoon and he needs more ABs than that. I could also see him being possible trade fotter. But if he continues to destroy baseballs in AAA, he will force someone's hand for sure.

First, that's kind of creepy.

Second, this isn't a thread about Anderson so I'm not going to go into the long debates I've had on this board about him. If you want to relitigate the past, we can do it in the minor league thread from yesterday.

Back to Arcia, I'd be shocked if AA sees him as a multi-year starter. I'd be shocked if AA sees him as a starter beyond the first few months of this season.

Kinda creepy? It's takes 2 min to do a topic search along with a member name.

If AA painted himself into a corner such that we have to stick with the worst starting SS in terms of WAR in the majors, then that's a pretty big failure by AA.

Arcia is a bench guy. He's getting paid like a bench guy, he has the tools of a bench guy, he's show he's a bench guy. He should never have been considered a legitimate option to start.

We aren't going to have to have the worst starting SS in the majors if he puts up 1.5 WAR. Probably not even bottom 10. A 1.5 WAR starting SS in 2022 would have been good for 19th.

I am not even suggesting Arcia will maintain what he is doing.. But I am sure he is currently pacing well ahead of a 1 - 2 WAR mark. His Dwar has to be positive right now.

He is pacing at 3.5 Fwar 5 games in with a 133wrc+ and a .357 BaBip... I did find it odd he was sub .300 the last 3 years. If he can maintain a .310 Babip, then I think he might do alright offensively.

He likely won't, his career BABIP is .285.

I doubt they move him off SS until he proves for a fact he can't play the position. It's doubtful the Braves play him at SS at the majors. He's more likely to be traded.
