Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

I agree completely that this new fielding system is going to change everything. I just believe that the method of evaluating defense at this point in time is guesswork at best. Yes, its easy to say that Simmons/Heyward are great defenders. But how great? Thats up for debate.

I wouldn't call it guesswork. The data they use for UZR and DRS is real. The more data available however the better these stats will become.

pitchers break...all the time

Yup, that's why the extensions the Braves have given (young position players) makes sense and extending pitchers doesn't.

How many people clammored for extending Beachy and/or Medlen? Both are now second TJ patients and their careers could potentially be over. I'm not saying they will be but I think the number of players who've had long productive careers after 2 TJs is pretty small.

I think its fair to say that Medlen/Beachy will never be impactful major leaguers again. That sucks.....

Also why Teheran's was the only extension I didn't care much for.

I can see Meds maybe coming back from it since he doesnt rely on velocity, mainly location/command.

But odds are slim he's most likely a set-up man at best the rest of his career.
