ESPN is reporting that the Dodgers offered him an extension (and now the 'firing' I described earlier is being reported as a 'mutual-parting') ... makes you wonder.

I just read the article too....from what it says, they offered him an extension on top of his existing option for next year that he declined. stating that he would like to manage for a front office/ownership that brought him in.....

source: #Marlins definitely have interest in Don Mattingly. #Dodgers

Dave Martinez makes sense: Tampa connection to Friedman, and learned at Maddon's elbow. Not sure done deal but very, very high on list.

Heard on ESPN radio that Marlins were just waiting for Mattingly and Dodgers to part ways.

FYI: Dodgers DFA Brandon Beachy, and he declined assignment and became a free agent

Sounds kinda like Manager speak for "Numbers? I don't need all them numbers and computer junk." LOL

But . . . but . . . but . . .

I was definitely frustrated that our FO non-tendered Beachy. $1.5m with a non-guaranteed option (last arb year) and Juan Jaime's roster sport seemed like a risk worth taking. Ultimately, they made the right call and I was wrong.

I was in the same boat as you when they made that move. at the time, I had no idea they would use all these youngsters and wanted both Beachy and Meds to try and make a comeback. Maybe they still will, but I too tip my cap to the FO for making the right call. I think Beachy needs to work on being a bullpen guy for now. just except his career will not turn out like he had hoped and do what he can to stay in the game.

I want to make it clear I have nothing against Beachy. I was more reacting to the eruption that took place on the board last year when he was non-tendered. I partially understand the reaction because it was made in the midst of a total upheaval, but Beachy wasn't going to contribute this year. Curious to see where he ends up next year.

I always thought he was more suited for the bullpen, but I don't think putting him there would have helped him avoid his surgeries.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reporting that the Cubs are looking for SP and the Braves like Jorge Soler . . .

Talks that stalled at the trade deadline are expected to be revisited with teams including the Padres, Indians and Braves for pitchers such as Tyson Ross, Carlos Carrasco and Julio Teheran (the Cubs also covet Cleveland utility man Lonnie Chisenhall, who would immediately improve the porous outfield defense).

Two of the following three could be gone by spring training if the Cubs are able to pull off the trades for the pitching they want: infielder Javy Baez, second baseman Starlin Castro and right fielder Jorge Soler. The Braves are especially high on Soler.

They have a ton of offense not so much pitching. They could try to ship off Castro and include soler for pitching AND still sign a big name.

Lester
Zimmerman
Arrieta
Teheran
Hammel

I'd give up alot for Soler and Baez to. Teheran, Jenkins, Maybin, and one other prospect. That would us in pretty good position to turn things around quick. Sign a good catcher and we're in business.
