Outside the box idea, but Johan Santana is attempting another comeback this season. Would you throw a minor league deal at him to see if you can catch lightning in a bottle. Either for bullpen or starter?

I don't see where it could hurt. We've gotten some use out of really good arms who got derailed by injuries before. If Johan can get healthy, he's capable of making pitch.

Interesting news that Grilli is on track to be recovered by spring training. I would be in favor of spending less on the pen and using some of the savings to sign someone like KJ.
I don't disagree with the sentiment, but needing to save budget for a $2m player is an extremely pathetic reality.

After watching last year's bullpen I'd rather spend some and make sure it don't happen again. Grilli is getting up there in age so you never know how he'll heel. The Yanks are said to be willing to trade Andrew Miller, would yall be interested? Could we get Miller and Judge for Simmons and Maybin?

Johan Santana is another victim of the labral tear in the shoulder. That injury is death to a pitcher. It's much worse for a pitcher than an ulnar collateral ligament tear. This is why I don't think Mike Minor will come back.

If Minor could be brought back on like a 1 million dollar deal I'd do it. But not for 4 or 5. He's probably done.

I think you would have a better chance to catch lightening in a bottle by signing Josh Johnson to a deal and see if he has anything left in that elbow.

Reds sounds like they are open to trading most on the roster. Including chapman, Frazier, and Bruce. I wonder what it would take to get Frazier from them...?

He hit 35 homers last year, granted, in a hitter friendly park. Really dropped off after the all star break to a .220 average after he break but hit .285 before. Also he is at least a decent defensive 3b option.

I would try to put together a package for Frazier and Phillips. Now before I am banned from this board, Phillips did have a rebound year hitting just under .300. He has always been known as a defensive second base option. With the clubhouse presence and defensive upgrades I think that would make the team better. Also, Frazier has 2 years left on the deal which should get us close to the arrival of Riley

Markakis
Phillips
Freeman
Frazier
Olivera
Maybin
Simmons

Not the ideal line up with no true lead off hitter. And I am pretty confident that maybin will be traded.

While I'd love to trade for Frazier I don't think we are good enough to justify spending the resources(prospects) to get him. I hope we trade for guys who are younger who haven't had "breakout" seasons with more team control.

As anything it'd come down to price. Taking Phillips contract would lessen the prospects it would take. It would be fun watching Simmons and Phillips up the middle.

Looks like we're looking to move Maybin if we needed any further confirmation. Also looking to move Swisher which is surprising with Olivera's likely move to left. Swisher's gonna be hard to move.

People seemed to get more upset over the Olivera deal, but the Swisher/Bourn deal made less sense to me even if those two are off the books after 2016. There's no way Swisher goes anywhere unless he's carrying a big wad of Woodrow Wilsons ($100,000 bill for those who didn't know that) in a briefcase along with him.

THe Swisher/Bourn trade makes sense if you think of things in the context of 2017. Basically this year and the next 2 years of Johnson are about equal. What this trade allows the braves to do is backload a lot of money this year that will then be off the books.

WHen you look at our estimated payroll, for this year in guaranteed money we're at about 73M, next year we're at about 59M, that is including the steep rise in salary from Freeman and slight rises from julio and SImmons. That's why the move is made so next year we can still suck but the following year we can take the money from Swisher/Johnson and invest that into a premium talent.

Now I think the failure to that strategy is that next year's free agents aren't as nice as this year. This yhear we have Heyward, Justin, Price, Greinke, ZImmerman, and though we don't need him, Chris Davis is on the market to draw heat from one of those higher rated players. and there's lots of non-star but solid players like Desmond, Zobrist, etc. 2017 has a few interesting players, Baultista, Beltran and a few other old free agents, pitchers have Strasburg and not much more.

I would personally have rather kept Johnson and used him as a buffer for 2017.
