Now the Cubs signed Shane Victorino. They're up to something

not sure.. seems strange for a team loaded like the Cubs taking a flyer on Shane. Not sure if they need anymore OF depth.. They have 4 starters plus Baez. They just traded one of their OF from last year to the As.. can't remember his name though..

It would be a poor use of resources to have young guys like Baez and Soler in part time roles. They are young potential studs that need to be getting reps every day, not rotting away on the bench losing value as their service timer continues to tick up. Victorino is the exact type of veteran player on the backside of his career that would serve perfectly as a 4th OFer.

The Cubs should be using Baez/Soler to acquire another TOR pitcher with 2+ years of control left.

If they could get a TOR starter for Baez or Soler, those guys would be gone by now.

At no point did I say for just Baez or Soler. And yes, they are both the type of talent that serve as the centerpiece for a TOR pitcher trade. They would be poorly utilized as part time players if the goal is to maximize resources.

Read that the Shane V. deal was in place prior to the Fowler signing. Cubs just decided to honor their agreement. This may be much to do about nothing. Cubs could also AAA Soler until July, then assess if they want to trade him and what their needs are.

It would take huge assets besides Soler or Baez to fetch a TOR starter. Im surprised by how much this board over estimates those two.

Opening win totals over / under from Atlantis casino in Reno. IMO, Braves over is the best bet on the board.

Hammel is actually a very underrated pitcher with pretty good stuff.

Hammel is fine, I'm not saying he's not any good. But we have very little use for a 33-year-old SP who has one year left plus a team option. That is not the kind of return we need to be targeting if we're giving away one of our best assets.

So to me, Soler + Hammel is essentially the same return as just Soler. We don't need Hammel.

Not saying I would want the trade BUT Soler + Hammel = Soler plus whatever you can get for Hammel in trade at the deadline or offseason (which probably isn't huge, but not negligible).

Sure, but we're in a much better position in terms of leverage if we use Teheran to add more value to Soler than if we're simply trying to trade Hammel at the deadline. Again, Hammel just doesn't move the needle on that trade for us.

Braves are an easy over. We're not a 100 loss team.

I'm not sure yet what we'll be. I do feel like we're better than last year, but we'll see. And it's hard to gauge exactly what we were last year. We started 42-42, but we also finished 25-53 with a 14-46 stretch. That second half is a 110-loss pace.
