Around Baseball

Hate that this happened. For one, you never wanna see a talent like that go down. For two, the Nats will have a built-in excuse why we wipe the floor with them, when we certainly didn't need it.

Given the amount of injuries we've had the past 3-4 years, it is what it is.

Sucks for them but god knows, we've had our fair share lately.

Unfortunately the media will talk about it so much now since the Nats are the media darlings.

People say the same thing about Jason. Most players slide headfirst. Seems like Heyward and Harper have the bad luck while say Trout (who I"m sure slides headfirst way more often) has been largely unscathed.

You've made my point. Most players shouldn't slide head first, but it somehow became popular (largely because of Pete Rose--who also slid needlessly) and we live with the results. More jammed thumbs and broken fingers for next to nothing.

Ricky Henderson once said sliding headfirst is easier on the body than slide feet first. Think of the pounding your hips and upper legs take over a season.

Ricky is a once in a lifetime leadoff hitter and one of the all time greats.

If done correctly, the only thing about sliding feet first is the friction on the bottom part of your leg that's going against the dirt. Best way is to slide your foot across the top of the base, use your knee to stop the momentum and pop up with a foot on the base. Easier said than done, but more damage could potentially be done to the fingers wrist, elbow, and shoulder from a headfirst slide especially if you have fielder blocking most of the bag.

Also, Ricky used to play in a day where there were a lot of artificial turf ballparks, which was also very detrimental to player health. Ricky was a physical specimen as well being in as good of shape as anybody when he last played for the Padres.

Nah. Look at the replay. Wasn't a close play. Harper could have probably made it standing up or not sliding head first.

I think you are looking at the wrong play. It was the third inning in a 2-0 game (before the triple). The play at third was bang bang.

Apparently, he's had some damage to the thumb in the past so with the new injury it seems to make since to clean up both injuries.

I always slid headfirst, mainly bc it got me to the bag quicker. I never injured my wrist/hand/thumb, but I've seen it happen plenty of times. I've also seen guys injure their wrist sliding feet first.

The Nats are also missing Ramos, who broke the hamate bone. That is really a guy that cant stay healthy at all.

I must be, because the play I saw the throw was way off line.

I just think sliding head first is harder on the body. You can bang yourself up either way, but I just think going headfirst leaves a lot of fairly small bones very vulnerable. Plus, I don't think you can avoid the tag as well because you've really committed your body.

Edit: You are correct sir. I was looking at a different replay. But he's safe with a feet first "fade" slide with no problem.

No offense, man, but I also doubt that you had the mass capable of accelerating at the same rate as Jason Heyward, Bryce Harper, or even Rafael Furcal. That has to play a part.

So in non sliding news...Milwaukee is dominating. Are they legit enough to challenge or possibly dethrone the Cardinals in the Central?

Don't think so. I just don't think there's enough talent on that team. Their starting pitching has been almost as good as ours, but I don't think is nearly as talented. Like 3B, CF, RF, and C, but the rest isn't great. Could be wrong. Actually still like the Reds over them (as well as the Cards).

Trading Juan Fran was a mistake by Wren. Not a terrible mistake but don't know why we kept Schafer or any other OF instead of him.

I can see that. I'm not a fan of Schafer's. It's not like he got anything good for him, either. Or even decent.

Still like the Cards over them when it's said and done but Mil is legit.

Good rotation, solid lineup, good bullpen.
