Tigers still beat them in a series.

Scherzer/JV/Sanchez/Porcello > A's rotation.

A's pen is massively better however.

Not surprising to a few of us. This team is good and has won a lot of games. No reason that shouldn't continue into the future. Also of note I believe the A's are right there too at least since 2011. Another good team on a small budget.

Makes me wonder how good we'd be if Frank had any luck at all with his big money deals.

DEAL IS DONE: #Cubs send Samardzija and Hammel to #Athletics for Addison Russell, per sources. May be other players and team(s) involved.

...and Billy Beane swings for the fences. Bold. Bold as hell. And Theo continues to lay in a stockpile of young studs.

Great deal for the Cubs, great deal for the As. Wow.

Wow, Beane has to be the best GM in baseball. Best record in baseball by a mile with Scott Kazmir and Jesse Chavez as key members of the rotation. Now Beane sees his chance at a world series and he is going for it.

Not to denigrate Billy at all, but when our season was in serious jeopardy after Beachy/Minor, our guy was about as bold and decisive as a GM could be, too.

I love moves like this. That's a good baseball trade.

A's are going for it. Why not? They have a really good team that just got a lot better. I never like to say things like clear favorites to win the world series as anybody in the playoffs can get hot at the right time. But they have made their team really tough to face. If the Braves don't win it all I wouldn't mind seeing the A's take it.

I'm curious. What do you think their odds of winning the WS were before and after this trade.

I think the AL is fairly weak as a group of potential playoff teams. I think before this trade the Athletics had a 50 percent chance to win the AL. I may have been a tad presumptuous to say they'd win it all. I more so meant they would be in it. This trade makes them the clear favorite and perhaps best team in baseball. So they are looking at maybe a 30 percent chance of winning it then whole thing now.

If they extend Jeff Samardjiza that pitching staff is unreal. Hell it's best in baseball already.

I think they already were clearly the best team in baseball. This solidifies it.

If this makes any sense, it helps them for 162 but in a 5-7 game series, i dont think it matters all that much.

Angels acquire Joe Thatcher and Tony Campana from Arizona.

This weakens the Diamondback pen for the next 2 days which is obviously good news for Atlanta. I'm confident of a sweep if Harang has a good outing this afternoon.

Holy Jeez. I've been out with friends all night and I just got news of the A's acquisition. You want to talk about a good team... that lineup is great and the rotation is probably the best in baseball. Oh yeah, that bullpen? Pretty amazing.

Maybe in previous years but this year now the A's are clearly better rotation wise with Jeff S.

Eh

Samardzija, Gray, Hammel, and if Kazmir and Chavez hold up at a high level then yes. But if Kazmir gets hurt as he usually does and Jesse Chavez falters then they're in trouble. Milone is a solid pitcher but not great.

And I'm talking about as constructed right now, not speculating on injuries that may or may not happen... But the Tigers rotation is not as intimidating in reality as the names involved.

Have to largely disagree. Sanchez and Scherzer are beasts, Porcello is as good as Kazmir/Chavez. Verlander and Smyly are nothing special.

Not sure if the latest numbers reflect the trade or not, but Fangraphs puts the A's odds of winning the WS at 13% and their odds of making the WS at 23%. The trade won't move those numbers by more than 5%.
