Around Baseball

Matt Moore has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
It's a near-certainty that Moore will require Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, which would cost him the rest of the 2014 season and even part of 2015. The talented 24-year-old left-hander suffered the torn ligament Tuesday in his second start of the year. He owns a cool 3.53 ERA and 339 strikeouts in his first 347 major league frames, but now his career will likely have to be put on hold.

This is horrible now. Maybe innings restrictions are hurting pitchers.

It also goes back to the kids playing AAU ball from the time they are 8. My son was in AAU from ages 8 to 11 and we stopped. The amount of ball these kids now play at a young age is insane.

Thanks Modok. I think the innings limit needs to start in about fourth grade.

I don't know. The NYT published an excellent piece on opening day about Tanaka and the overall psyche of youth baseball in Japan. They play their kids longer AND harder than we do, yet experience little by the way of arm injuries. I think you can look at that on several different levels -- how Americans pitch/play (ie. more emphasis on velocity than location / guile), down a more holistic comparison regarding diet/lifestyle etc.

Yeah, I personally believe this is all residual from the steroid era where everyone felt they had to throw 98 MPH fastballs to get it by the hitters. Hopefully that changes soon.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Jon Lester turned down a four-year, $70-$80 million extension offer.
The offer, which is well below Lester's expected market value, could cost the Red Sox a chance at re-signing their ace left-hander. Rosenthal reports that Lester has cut off negotiations until the offseason, and appears as if he'll test the waters of free agency.

Happy for B-Mac that he got something going today. NY can be a rough place when you aren't producing.
