Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

What an awful, heartbreaking couple of days in the baseball world.

Quite literally spent an hour on Google chat just on Flores on Tuesday as I'm prepping my Red Sox list. I have written three memorial articles in the last two days - one on Halladay, one on a long time Twins bullpen coach, and the last Flores. I'm ready to take a break from these kinds of articles....

Ned Yost was in a hunting accident recently. Fell about 20ft out of a tree stand. Shattered his pelvis. Will be in a wheel chair for 2 months. He said that he would have bled out had he not had his cell phone with him. Was helicoptered from the scene of the accident.

Prayers to him.

Wow. Prayers for him for sure. Glad everyone has cell phones.

I feel incredibly sorry for the fans of whatever dumb team makes JD Martinez a top 10 highest paid player in baseball.

Man, David Wright does not look well. I know he's been through the ringer the past few years, but this pic caught me off-guard.

"Sherman notes, the Yankees are intrigued by the idea of adding the game’s former No. 1 overall prospect in exchange for some of the pitchers on the fringes of their 40-man roster as they look to set that 40-man roster in advance of the Rule 5 Draft. "

Exactly the type of acquisition the Braves should be trying to make.

This is why the small/mid market teams are in trouble. The big boys are just as smart now.

I've been wanting profar since the trade deadline. It makes a lot of sense as a good buy low

Some chatter about the Rays moving Longoria.

Not sure what that prospect costs would be.

His deal tops out at 19.5 million in 2022. You definitely have his decline, but the figures aren't crazy.

He seems to be a good defender and his offense flips between average and real good.

Rather give up prospects for him or sign Moustakas to more money?

Neither maybe makes sense, but it's something to talk about.

Blue Jays and the Braves discussed a Nick Markakis deal acording to Morosi. Nothing came of it. May pick up later, but what we all kind of expect. Probably have to kick in some cash to get rid of him.

not good that our efforts so far are focused on finding takers for Adams and Muk...there is a glut of players with their skill sets

They are likely the only ones who can actually be traded under any circumstances. Kemp will probably have to be released.

Given the market's developing at slower than a snail's pace, it's kinda hard to criticize the brass - I'm as anxious as everyone else is, but when Doug Fister is the marquee development thus far, it's probably a blessing. AA's not having to rush and make any quick judgments yet.

Posted in the rule 5 thread but what about Muk and $2M for Max Pentecost. Jays left Pentecost unprotected. Braves trade for him and protect him. Like paying $2M for Pentecost and getting rid of Muk. Jays get Muk for $8.5M and only lose a guy they probably would lose anyway.

Not making excuses by any means, but that's what happens when you have back/neck/shoulder surgeries and can't work out - pretty comical that folks have *itched at Markakis providing league-average offense given his problems.
