Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Andrew Gould, a write for Bleacher Report, proposed a few blockbuster trades in his most recent article. One of those trades has the Braves sending Allard, Touki, and Demeritte to the O's for Kevin Gausman.

Not sure how I feel about that one. I like Gausman but I'm not sure he's more than a mid rotation starter.
The cost is fair, but I just am not crazy about giving up that much talent for a mid rotation pitcher when we could easily sign a similar pitcher in the off-season. Obviously that doesn't help us now, but I'd rather target someone like Liriano, Lynn, Ross, or Odorizzi, who should be much cheaper to acquire.

No way I do something like that if I'm the Braves. Huge overpay. I don't trade Touki straight up for Gausman...i don't trade Allard straight up for Gausman.

Bo: Seems like a pretty light return for Eovaldi, no? A 45 FV LHP in AAA – why didn’t the Braves spring for him at a low cost?

Kiley McDaniel: Braves don’t have a directly comparable guy. Maybe Tucker Davidson or Kyle Muller? Would Braves fans do that deal?

I'd gulp and trade Muller for Asdrubal Cabrera (with the Mets picking up some of his remaining salary) if it came down to it. I'd try hard to avoid it by exploring other options. But Muller is the best of our prospects that I would give up for a rental. And that rental would not be a starting pitcher for me.

Watching the Dodgers today, I'm going to be pretty irrationally angry if the Braves can't at least split this weekend series. I thought I wasn't going to watch this game but I did and I regret it.

I wouldn’t . You’d be selling awful low on him.

One thing that I think this trade deadline will show is how much other teams value our good but not great prospects. I consider Muller to be the best from that group. Guys like Tucker Davidson, Cumberland, Jackson, Encarnacion, Isranel Wilson, Sanchez, Tarnok, Ynoa, de la Cruz, etc... I have a feeling at least a few of those guys are going to be moving. I'm just interested to see what the return is for them.

I'd be tempted at that cost, but ultimately I'd want a better option. Eovaldi could implode any minute. I still want Odorizzi.

Yeah. For me Muller is the best of the group I'm willing to trade from this year for a rental. For a non-rental I'd be willing to consider trading Wentz.

The off-limits guys: Gohara, Soroka, Pache, Touki, Wilson, Wright, Allard, Riley, Fried, Waters, Contreras. Fried being a recent addition to the off-limits group.

The Dodgers will turn it around against us. Teams seem to bring their A game when they play us. The Brewers looked like the best team in baseball when they swept us and promptly went into a tailspin.

Strasburg to the DL. RUH ROH.

I've always thought Strasburg to be this era's Bert Blyleven; awesome--electric--stuff with a flake mentality. Some physical issues for Strasburg, but when combined with a seeming lack of mental toughness, he always seems to be on the precipice of disaster. Nats still owe him about $140 million through 2023 season. Being in the nation's capital, maybe the Nats can get an amendment attached to the Ag bill or get an Executive Order fashioned to bail out onerous contracts.

He is a team cancer if you ask me.

LA is going to be due some wins now after playing like garbage in philly.

I can see that reasoning but they are on the last leg of a 10 game road trip and we may be catching them at just the right time. Their bullpen is running on fumes after the 16 inning game two nights ago and the rookie not lasting 5 innings yesterday.
