Around the League 2020 Edition

Im not concerned either way but I would think that unless FF wants to go home, he is very close to family, he would be inclined/influenced somewhat by Chipper to sign a team friendly deal for his decline years.

Giants beat the Rockies 23-5, which is weird all around.

Jayson Stark pointed out the Giants scored in every inning but the ninth, which was pitched by a Rockies position player.

.....

It seems to me that it would be preferably for a manager to throw in the towel rather than play out a game that is that much of a runaway. Is this an option under the current rules?

I can see a manager taking the position that you never should quit or something, but there is really no value to playing out some of these blowouts. It would be safer and better for both clubs to just call it at some point.

Have to wonder with how poorly some of these long term contracts that take players into their late 30's/early 40's turn out, that teams will begin to avoid handing them out. There are some TERRIBLE contracts out there. Aside from Miggy and Pujols, Chris Davis comes to mind, so does Justin Upton.

That combined with Covid and money being down, should be interesting.

Wonder how long Freeman would even be looking for in terms of an extension. He doesn't appear to be someone who would hold out of the most money. Appears very down to earth in terms of happiness and comfort level are paramount.

I don't think Freddie is very similar in body type to Pujols or Cabrera. He's never been beefy like that.

Not that I'm arguing it makes him immune from similar decline.

Sure. Freddie doesn't have the typical 1B build. Still, it's a concern for anyone getting to that age.

Chipper, injury issues aside, stayed at an elite hitter level through age 36.

I think Freddie could do a Mark Grace impersonation until he's in his late-30s, but I don't know what that is worth.

I think watching Goldschmidt might be instructive. That's the best modern comp I can think of.

What I was driving it is it appears Freeman has the stroke that will keep him hitting into his late-30s, but he might have to sacrifice some power to do that. And again, in today's game I don't know if teams will put much value on that.

Partly because of his close relationship with Chipper, I'm not so sure Freddie will require typical extension to stay. Having been the face of the franchise for awhile like Chipper was, there's a pretty fair amount of trust built up between Freddie and the front office. He doesn't make a big deal of mentioning it all the time, but if you listen close to his interviews after they've made a big signing like Donaldson/Ozuna/Hamels he says "they talked to me about it". As long as they continue to treat him like they have and they keep him in the loop, he seems like he'd be OK signing a series of one-year plus option deals as long as the money is fair and the team remains competitive with the core group staying together. That's why I've been in favor of talking to Soroka and Fried about extensions - not necessarily huge ones, but something giving the club options on their first couple of free-agent seasons. That kind of commitment is probably enough to get Freddie to say "I'll hang around as long as this group is here" like Chipper did at the end.

Have to admit, I've really missed keeping track of the minor league performances.

This was going to be a really interesting year for the lower minors.

Last year's draft strategy essentially dictated that. It's going to hurt our ability to swing trades without having low level guys with helium, especially since AA doesn't seem too inclined to trade any of the upper level guys.

Pujols last year in St Louis was 31 and he was still elite. His decline was rapid (and he was quite athletic -- 10-15 SB, elite level defense). Guys like Chipper who stay elite into their 30's are the exception and its going to happen less and less with the increased velocities around the sport.

There's a price where FF makes sense of course. Chipper's contracts are the ideal model of how you deal with aging superstars.

I hope the Braves don't have the privilege of paying him $25M per for 4 years to do it.

This should be a HUGE warning light for those that want to extend FF past his current deal.

I would never have envisioned how quickly Pujols regressed. He was always athletic and extremely talented hitter and not just a masher. Basically the HOF version of FF.

Think FF's deal will depend on years for AA and not money per.

I dont know if AA gives him like a 5-7 year deal.

Realmuto leaning towards trying the FA route again for 2021

Considering Philly didnt get a deal with him before the year, i would assume thats the case. Mets fans think they'll be all over him if he hit the market.

Always more of a "he carries it surprising well" though.

He'll have a QO at a minimum...

BA has something on the draft format this week didn't they?
