Around the League - 2021 Szn

Braves being goody two-shoes as usual. I guess bending the rules is only acceptable on the international front.

Looking at the Giants, Astros and Trevor Bauer, I'd say the rule isn't being bent. It's being smashed to bits. And it seems like if you're only going to violate one unenforced rule, this is the one to do it.

LA is paying Bauer $84,000,000 for 2021-2022. Without substances, he's a 4.00-4.50 FIP pitcher.

This is going to be interesting.

First start after the 10 game suspension announcement, and Gerrit Cole gives up 5 and spin rate drops off the map.

Hadn’t allowed more than 2 all year

His FA spin rate has been consistently 2529-2584 this year. Last night it was 2436. That's a ~100 rpm drop.

Certainly seems suspect.

Would love to be a fly on the wall to hear exactly what AA and his lieutenants think about the young pitching to get a feel for whether he'd try to make a blockbuster in the event Ozuna's money becomes available.

If it does and the Cubs go cold soon, it would be interesting to see if he'd make a play for Bryant AND Kimbrel. With Martin and d'Arnaud coming off the books you could cover Kimbrel's 2022 salary. Sending Ender back would help even the money for this season, and with Ozuna, Morton, and Smyly off the books you could probably make a play to re-sign Bryant next winter.

Anyone see the Cole interview about substances?

There’s such a long pause a few times in there I thought my phone was buffering

Hey do you guys remember that time we still needed pitching and put Kevin Gausman on waivers? That was awesome.

I opposed it at the time. Doubt anybody saw this season coming but he's always been an above average starter. Braves moving on after a poor half season was extremely short sighted. This (not the Smyly or Hamels deals) is AA's biggest mistake as the Braves GM imo.

Hard to say. I do believe these people are humans. I'm not sure KG recovers as a brave. I think it had gotten to a toxic place and he needed a fresh start to be good again.

Giving up on him early was shortsighted given his FIP was only 4.20. But I think it's rather obvious what he's doing now. It's the same thing that likely got Smyly his contract this past winter. You don't go from being league average or slightly better to being an elite starter. I don't think it's a coincidence he played with Bauer either.

Quite possible you are right with that.

Something odd happened during Gausman's time in Atlanta. He was pitching MUCH better than his numbers suggested, and the Braves FO doesn't typically give up on pitchers with good underlying data (see Luke Jackson as an example). I remember several arguments on this board where folks said stupid things about Gaus being terrible, when he very clearly wasn't (calling Newk better, etc). I suspect something we aren't privy to caused his departure.

AA has certainly made some moves I consider poor though...

I hated the Smyly deal.

I hated the Smith deal, especially since AA never gave out longish FA deals...until this particular BP arm for some reason.

I actually liked the Hamels deal, and thought he was a good fit, but I didn't have access to medical data that may have suggested he wasn't a good bet health-wise.

Yeah, AA has been worrying me the last couple of years, when he was damn near perfect the first couple.
