Around the League - 2021 Szn

Look, I’m all for these minor leaguers getting a bump in living quality from their billionaire employers. These owners can absolutely afford to do it, and if I was one of them I’d like to think that I’d help them at least live comfortably. But, really, who cares? These are first world problems. That’s not to say that they’re not real problems, but it’s not something to get bent out of shape over either as a 3rd party.

This.

If it was 3rd world living conditions, they'd not pursue it.

Get roommates, split the cooking up, eat hamburger helper a lot and go work out again. Its kinda the thing to embrace the struggle before hitting it. The climb is the thing.

The players and the owners should send more money to the minors. But they don't care about those guys. The agents want more money and the owners want more money. They consistently sh!t on the minors.

I think it would be smart in negotiations for the owners to include the minor leaguers in the revenue going to players and publicly state they want to raise it. Instead they went to Congress to get approval to treat the minor leaguers poorly.

Taking out of the equation whether or not the players deserve a raise or not, doesn't it make sense for the teams to ensure that they aren't eating hamburger helper and ramen noodles before sleeping on a couch every night? I wonder if there are guys who could've made it if teams invested in things like nutrition and lodging at low levels, which can ultimately have a significant impact on physical performance. We're talking about guys striving to be elite athletes, not a random sophomore in college trying to pass biology.

It certainly seems like an easy calculus. Given the surplus value young MLB players provide (10s of millions of dollars), it seems like spending a million bucks on MiLB players to get even one more guy to pan out as an MLB player would more than justify the cost.

Even getting one more premium athlete into your organization rather than trying his luck as a football/basketball player would more than pay for itself.

MLB just can't seem to get out of it's own way sometimes. It's almost like they don't understand they are competing for premium athletes by offering them pauper wages for several years while the other sports offer them a much better lifestyle. Hey awesome 2 sport star! Come play baseball and eat lettuce sandwiches for 5 years rather than being treated like royalty at a big-time college! Give me a break...

This is fair, though their selling point for premium athletes is big bonuses straight out of high school.

Also, the money down the road is much better in baseball. More per year, guaranteed contracts, and you generally have a longer career, at least compared to football.

Pretty much everything written on this site is centered around first world problems. The rest is about your mom.

Wow! Comments from Mets GM, on his players lengthy recovery from injury this year:

But when asked why all these soft tissue injuries are occurring, Scott admitted that sometimes compliance by the player comes into play.

“Most of the time, I’ll be honest, it’s compliance issues,” he told reporters when asked what’s led to injuries.

“Actually following the plan because these are all individuals and control their own bodies. Sometimes they’re not as compliant as they should be. I’ve seen that happen in the past.”

What a great way to boost morale. Upper management calling out their employees for being too injured.

As much grief as everyone gives the Rockies, Pirates, and Orioles about how terribly they are run, the Mets rival them, but with a significant payroll advantage.
