Around the League - 2021 Szn

Is Morton a victim of a substance? He went to Houston and turned into a different guy. Then this year with all the substance talk we’ve seen his numbers slide.

I haven't looked at his RPM history but from a performance standpoint I think he's been fine.

He went to Houston in 17 and moved to Tampa in 19

FIP:
2017 - 3.46
2018 - 3.59
2019 - 2.81
2020 - 3.45
2021 - 3.60

His K rate jumped to 10 K/9 in 17 as well and has been at least 9.95 every year since including this season.

Hey may have been using and maybe if he stops now he's going to suddenly become crap again but he's pitched in line with what he's done the last few years and at this point any drop in stuff I would likely say is due to age since he's 37.

Morton just seems to be a bit snake bit this year. He pitches well but seems to have one inning where shiit hits the fan and he gives up 3-5 runs.

Morton's FA spin rate has stayed in the 2280-2389 range all year, and those values are in line with his previous seasons. He either never cheated, or hasn't stopped cheating yet.

His 2021 xwOBA is .317, which is a little better than an average #4 SP. I personally expected more of a .300 type xwOBA from him, but I think part of it is how Snit is using him....and age related decline.

Morton is pitching about as expected. Solid mid rotational pitcher that is expected to give you 5-6 quality innings every 5th day. FIP and xFIP suggest he's been a bit unlucky, but not overtly so. He's on pace for a little over 3 WAR given 35 starts, which is precisely the sort of pitcher most of us were expecting.

Kolby allard is pitching well.
2.93 era
3.39 FIP
9.68 k9, 2.25 bb9

he has. Still think he's a guy that needed to go somewhere else to be better. Needed especially to go somewhere to let him work through mistakes.

If we didn't trade him I bet he was going to be off the 40 man.

Another victim of the "rush them to the bigs" approach that the Braves have practiced over the past few years. He clearly wasn't ready when he first came up. Contrast that with Anderson, who they didn't rush and looked ready from Day 1 in the majors.

That aside, I have no problems with the Allard-for-Martin trade. It was a classic now-for-later deal and given where Allard was at, there were (and, in truth, probably still are) questions about what the later will end up being.

Can we really say they didn't rush Anderson though? He only had pitched 5 games above AA, and in reality was only called up because we had nobody else last year.

Allard did some up to Atlanta for 3 games during his age 20 season, but overall he did start 39 games for the team in AAA. I believe with Allard the issue with the stuff was just not as advertised when he was drafted.

Allard pitched a whole 93 innings below AA before debuting at Mississippi at age 19. Anderson pitched 258 innings below AA before getting late-season promotion to Mississippi as a 20-year-old. He started the subsequent season at Mississippi again. Anderson did pitch less at AAA, but that was largely due to the pandemic. I'm probably an outlier, but I still think getting high school pitchers a solid instructional base before promoting them remains important. Adding to that, Allard is your classic pitchability LHP coming off a back injury.

Maybe we don’t develop pitchers like a pitching factory should.

The Braves are pretty clearly a hitting factory, one of the many ways the Baseball Deities have thumbed their beatific noses at the disastrous hubris of The Three Johns.

Baseball gods laugh at DeGrom and have him walk the pitcher. Payback for opposing pitchers having about a 1.000 OPS against us.

Fried, Soroka, and Anderson not enough for you? Possibly Ynoa as well. Newk is probably a very good reliever going forward. A plethora of other pitching prospects that could still pan out too.

Newcomb is trash.

But, I agree with you. I’ve made this argument before. The Braves perceived inability to develop pitching is greatly overstated.

Acuna leads all NL position players in fWAR at 3.7. But sadly it looks like the deGrom is heading towards the trifecta of awards with the Cy Young, MVP, and Silver Slugger. Hell they might give him the Gold Glove too.

Newk was great in the pen in 2019. He's been bad this year, but he's been jerked back and forth between AAA and Snit has no idea to manage a pen. Granted Sean has torpedoed himself with walks, but in the Stl game, every hitter he saw was either a switch hitter or hit RH. And Snit left him in there to pitch to Goldy and Arenado. Same deal with the Dodgers. He takes out Anderson and brings in Newk to pitch to Mookie and the rest of the heart of their order.
