Around the League - 2021 Szn

Same number of hits, Duvall with 8 more HRs and 6 RBI in the short season. What do you see that I dont?

Using hits, homeruns, and RBIs tells you little about the actual offensive production. wRC+ tells you how much better (or worse) a player has produced when compared to the league average. wOBA and xwOBA (expected wOBA using statcast data I believe) are the other two stats that really differentiate.

Duvall: 109 wRC+ (or 9 percent better than league average), .323 wOBA, .310 xwOBA
Riley: 122 wRC+ (or 22 percent better than league average), .353 wOBA, .356 xwOBA

I'll admit they aren't as far apart as I thought they'd be, but Riley is clearly far and away the better offensive producer. The .356 to .310 xwOBA gap is substantial.

Before todays game (where he was 2-4 with another bomb) Ohtani was worth 3.7 fWAR as a hitter and 1.5 fWAR as a pitcher. It's 3.5 and 1.9 using bRef's formula. It's an incredible pace but we could see another 10 WAR season. deGrom is on pace for 10 fWAR as well which would be an even rarer feat. Only 21 pitchers have had 10 fWAR in a season and it's happened only 3 times since 1973.

One of those was Maddux. And that was in a shortened season. Should’ve won MVP that year.

Incorrect. Maddux was at 7.9 fWAr and 9.7 bWAR. Only Clemens, Johnson, and Pedro did it.

People are gushing over deGrom and his historic season and for good reason. But it still isn't Pedro's 99 season imo considering the state of the offensive game then and now.

Ohtani is leading off for the AL and also the starting pitcher. MLB finally did something that makes sense to promote the game. Kudos.

Will Craig, the rookie Pirates 1B who made that ridiculous fielding gaffe against the Cubs, has signed with the KBO in an effort to 'start over'.

I didn't realize that Craig was actually the Pirates' first-round pick in 2016. Lucky for him MLB doesn't give prospective draft picks the Wonderlic.

On the plus side for Craig, he's moving to a better team.

MLB and MLBPA have extended Bauers' administrative leave through July 27th

Also, obviously not a coincidence, he has not tweeted since June 26th. I am curious how long he will remain on the administrative leave before their investigation is finally completed.

When will the braves attempt to send ozuna on rehab assignment? He should be getting close to healthy

They said 6-8 weeks from time of injury for his DL stint. Right now we are at either 6 or 7. So i'd have to expect some kind of announcement soon. However, I wouldn't be shocked if MLB gave him the Bauer treatment, telling him to stay home for the rest of the season on administrative leave.

Bauer has not been charged with a felony yet tho IIRC the Pasadena police are investigating it as a "felony". I think that at least one of them will be banned when it all is settled.

MLB can’t do that. They can put him on administrative leave for 7 days and then can put him on for 7 more with approval from the union. He’d receive full pay and service time as well.

I guess MLB can keep asking the Union for 7 day extensions. It’s still full pay and service time though.

Random all star related question, but does anyone know who the last Braves player is to hit a HR in an all star game? By doing a manual search I found Chipper in 2000 and Javy in 97. Wasn't sure if there have been any since. No easy way to search.

Andruw in 2003.

Such a bizarre situation. I can't imagine some woman going "please choke me until i pass out, then punch me and #$%^ me." He's gotta be done as a player

Man...how far has Nomar Mazara fallen? DFA. He was a top 25 prospect but this shows what can happen when you are rushed. I think he only played in 20 games or so in AAA.
