Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Of course it wasn’t. The point was about his entire body of work. That was just a footnote.

i mean you called him a good GM and very good at “win now” mode which is essentially just spending money/trading prospects. that isn’t what makes a GM good, but carry on i suppose.

So there’s only one thing that makes a good GM a good GM? A GM can’t be good if he’s only trying to win, when the main requirement of a GM’s job is…to win?

And I also spent that whole paragraph citing other examples of him actually building multiple clubs into long term contenders.

But, carry on I suppose.

There are a lot of GMs that are very bad at win now mode. Texas and Detroit this year tried to “win now” and were really bad at it. Preller in SD has made a number of bad “win now” moves (even though he’s a top tier “builder”)

Spending money and trading the right prospects is a skill. It’s precisely the reason AA has been successful here (and even he has made a number of poor FA signings).

texas and detroit are 15th and 18th respectively in payroll. the phillies are 4th and have been up there for years. that is not remotely the same level of “win now.” dombrowski walked into a huge payroll and has just spent more. i’m just not going to call him a good GM, or very good “win now” GM because there’s not much to back it up.

Merrill Kelly down to 2.81 ERA (which is impressive pitching in that park, ERA+ is above 140 now). He has three shutouts in his last five starts

Was it Striker who tried to tell us that Kelly was in fact a bum?

Harris extension is another data point that the Braves and Swanson are either on different planets with his value, Swanson doesn’t want to be here or Swanson is determined to maximize salary.

All that makes it really hard to see him on the team next year.

Maybe the market opens his eyes or the Braves. But aa mo has been to select his guy and go get him the first week of free agency.

Braves are now only 1/2 game out for 4th best record in the bigs behind the Yankees. I think the Yankees once had a 15 game lead or more in record on Atlanta.

3 of the 4 best records in the NL belong to the East.

On fried you have to wonder if aa just won’t do extension for pitchers. That makes sense and could explain why we draft mostly pitchers overall and mostly pitchers early.

I agree that with all this money being handed out and nothing given to Fried could mean that or Fried wants to go back to LA and get paid.
