BA Model Rates Braves Farm System At #10

I think some look at Peraza and profile him as a leadoff guy because of his speed, but to this point, his OBP doesn't scream leadoff guy.

The guy I'm interested in seeing how he does going forward is Kyle Wren. Great speed, .391 combined OPB at 3 levels this year. He could very well see some time in Mississippi in 2014.

I think as long as your lead-off man gets on base at a 35% clip or higher then you have a pretty successful lead-off man. Look all through MLB and you will find 3 lead off hitters who had an OBP higher than .350 last year. Seriously, go look it up and you will see how difficult it is to find a "traditional" lead off off hitter who has a decent OBP. Shin Soo Choo ,Matt Carpenter, and Norichika Aoki were the only guys I found that had 500+ AB's as a lead off hitter with an OBP over .350 in all of baseball and Choo and Carpenter are guys who are better suited hitting lower in the line up.

I am intrigued by Kyle Wren as he had a great debut season but he did only have a small sample size as a 22 year old in A ball. The 32 steals in 47 games is impressive though.

The article doesn't say the Braves have the tenth best system in baseball, the article says the braves have the tenth best in near term value. as in can help in 2014 it's not an overall ranking. A decent role player in AAA has more near term value than a 18 yr old in low A ball that went .330-,425-.550.

Teams with decent players in the high minors will rank high on this list.

Braves have both.

Right. This is not the same as BA's annual ranking of farm systems, which will come later.

Good reminder. We will likely drop a few pegs in the traditional BA rankings. Twins will probably skyrocket upwards due to Buxton, Sano, and Rosario.

I wouldn't be too sure. Scouts seem to love the talent at Rome. We won't be in the top 10 but I could see us somewhere in the 13-17 range.

That's wishful thinking. Most major publications will definitely have us in the lower third of the league.

We will have to see. Wood not being eligible is going to hurt but the talent on the Rome roster was excellent. I think scouts still view CB/Salcedo as future big leaguers. Then you have a whole glut of pitching that projects to be middle to back end rotation pitchers. There is more talent on the farm than people realize.

The few pegs I'm thinking would put us in the range where you have us. I'd guess we'll be right around the middle.

It doesn't sound like you really follow minor league prospecting around the league. I do, and I'm giving you an indication of what I've read.

Simms throws 93-95 is 6'2
Graham throws mid 90's
Hursh throws mid 90;s is 6'3
Cabrera throws 93-97 and is 6'2
Hale throws 92-94 and is 6'2
Teheran and Wood both have good velocity and graduated to the majors this year
Aaron Northcraft throws low 90's and is 6'4
Luis Merejo threw low 90's with room to add more.
Carlos Salazar throws 92-94
Alec Grosser throws 90-94 and is 6'4

The Cardinals consistently draft ahead of the Braves. Yeah it would be nice to have got someone like Michael Wacha but he was drafted before the braves got a chance to draft him. The Braves big thing the last few years is drafting power arms from college that have low mileage on them. Sometimes thats due to injury but they shy away from the ones who were abused in college.

We need to start drafting big body power arms like the Cards...All this finesse crap is for the birds

I agree. I think it's okay to take other types to round out things, but when in doubt, I always opt for the big power pitcher.

And, as cajun points out, we're building a nice little stable of them.
