He is careful about unwinding platoons too early (before the 7th inning) because he doesn’t want to give the other team a platoon advantage later.
He could probably do it in a higher leverage situation earlier at times, but I understand his reluctance.
There will always be things we disagree with the manager on, but he is consistent and has a reason for the decision, so it’s hard to be too upset about that.
Well, that reluctance is objectively wrong. Managers have gotten over the reluctance to use their closer in tie games while waiting for a save chance that may never come, and this is the same thing.
It’s better to guarantee a guy a PA with the platoon advantage when the score is close than to save that guy to maybe get a PA with the platoon advantage when the game might still be close.
Leading off an inning, or a PA with a runner on base against a BP arm in the 5th-7th inning is usually the correct time to unwind the platoon. It’s why you see the Dodgers do it almost every game.
