Following RUnnin's (or whoever's) comment on BJ being top 10 athlete in baseball made me reflect on the old addage, what sport breeds the best athletes?
Baseball requires little athletic ability I don't think Miguel Cabrera would be able to play most other sports. Some baseball players are great athletes and could play other sports. But th emajority aren't amazing athletes. One thing that baseball does require copious amounts of is dedication and for hitters exceptional hand eye coordination. Not a sport that everyone can succeed at. I think baseball is maybe the most mentally draining sport there is, the weak mentally fall out.
Football features some physical specimens. Some others who aren't as strong. Football is a twitch sport, lots of raw power and speed need, but not much endurance. Guys like Megatron are physical freaks but could they handle other sports as well? More running in basketball, soccer, etc. I think they can and would adapt personally. Aside from QB and maybe WR very little mental ability needed.
Basketball also features a ton of freaks. But again, I'm concerned about endurance aspects. More mental than Football by a long shot.
Hockey is a very physical sport, I would put it between football and basketball. It requires much more mental skill than football and much more of a physical beating than basketball.
Soccer is a bit of a betweener in many regards. Some terrible athletes but largely very athletic folk. Soccer requires mental skill when it comes to shooting and more and ability to track balls in the air and others. But it's not baseball or hockey or basketball. Phyiscally there's contact but it's not grating. What you have is is a very long running sport. Soccer players run miles per game. And it's at various speeds, sometimes at a walking pace, sometimes a brisk jog, sometimes a run, sometimes a full on sprint.
Tennis is a very physically demanding game, lots of sprinting lots of of coordination, and because of no time you have no clue how long you will be running for so being at tip top shape is a must.
Boxing is similar very physically demanding, requires mental strength and physical strength. Requires endurance, hand eye, and many others.
Gymnastics requires many skills, but you're competing on your own, you lack the ability to direct competition.
Swimming, running, other speed/endurance. You have lots of issues with these sports, all very tough sports to compete in, but the issue is that you are not physically competing in these sports. You're running against someone, but you're not hitting them and attacking them. Especially in swimming where you're confined to lanes. At least in running you can cut people off.
Any other suggestions? They're the biggest sports I could think of.
