Bethancourt

In the way the braves view (just looking at a fans perspective) everday catchers, I see them choosing Bethancourt over Gattis.

Gattis is 27 and every year in his professional career he has had a injury that cost him time. Some sere worse the others but I don't see Gattis as a guy that will age well.

I don't see any way he is the braves starting catcher when the braves open the new stadium.

Then they deserve to lose. Unless they plan on moving Gattis to left-field full-time, which also isn't that great of an idea.

What he is suggesting is the equivalent of using Eddie Perez over Javy Lopez as your everyday catcher. The Braves were not so stupid as to do that and they wouldn't be stupid enough to go with Bethancourt over Gattis.

As for the "injury issue" that some cite about Gattis, it is worth pointing out that catchers in general get injured a lot. Guys like Molina, McCann, Posey, Weiters have missed much more time in recent years with significantly worse injuries. Bethancourt has also missed time in recent years to a hamstring injury and a broken thumb that required surgery. If you compare games missed due to injury Gattis has probably missed less than the other guys listed above.

I'm not sure 1 stint on the 14 day DL counts for being an injury risk. It's a long season and 1 stint on the DL isn't the end of the world.

I do think he could get better with some more work on his body and his body getting used to the rigors of a full season.

I saw nothing from CB that makes me want him over Gattis. Our offense is awful and we can't have CB's production instead of Gattis. If an AL team wants to give us the moon, then fine. I'd don't think Gattis is untouchable. But no way is CB a better option now.

Have you ever paid attention to how many times catchers get injured? I see nothing on his resume so far to lead me to believe he is some sort of chronic injury risk. Little injuries happen all the time with such a physical position. If the back problem comes back, I may get a bit worried, but it seems like he's recovered pretty quickly which is a good sign that it shouldn't be a nagging injury at this stage.

I would almost guarantee that either Gattis or CB are traded before next season. Gattis would net a much higher return obviously, though his bat would be hard to replace.

I suspect either a Sale or Price will be our offseason targets. But it will depend on their sale price. (See what I did there? )

Is Price for Sale?

Skid, they don't buy that argument, tried it yesterday.

There is no one on the market as of yet. Maybe in due time, but not now.

From my standpoint, the Braves seem to value offense more than defense from their catchers. They typically have one very good offensive catcher and a strong defender as a back up. The guys that have caught the majority of the time for the Braves over the past 20 years are Javy Lopez and Brian McCann. Javy had a .839 OPS in 12 years for the Braves, and Brian McCann had an .823 OPS in 9 years with the Braves. Gattis's OPS is .809 in his short sample size of a career and .865 this year. Bethancourt may never crack .650 with his OPS.

I'd rather nut up for Sale in a trade.

Minor or Wood, Sims and Gattis or CB and see where that goes.

We don't have what it takes to get Sale. You are talking about Gattis/Peraza/+ for him. No thanks. Pitchers are way too much of an injury risk to trade for.

I agree but doesnt hurt to try.
