Black Immigrants

Interesting column on black immigrants.

Half of Black immigrants in the U.S. are from the Caribbean. More than half of Black immigrants have arrived since 2000, and those from Africa are the fastest-growing cohort and the primary source of the group’s present population growth. About a third of Black immigrants hold college degrees, matching the percentage of all immigrants. Their household income is 30 percent higher than the native Black population, and they are just as likely to own a home. A recent paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that it’s this group that’s narrowing the earnings gap between White and Black Americans.

The NBER paper referenced above shows striking upward mobility by the children of black immigrants.

We provide new evidence on earnings gaps between non-Hispanic White and three generations of Black workers in the United States during 1995-2024, using nationally representative data. Results reveal remarkable earnings advances among 2nd-generation Black immigrants, opposite to the well-documented widening in overall Black-White earnings gap. Among women, 2nd-generation Black workers have earnings higher than or equal to White women; among men, they earn 10% less at the median, but the gap vanishes at the top decile. The gap for 1st-generation Black men is shrinking, halving at the top decile; for 1st-generation Black women it shows initial widening then shrinking at the median. The native Black-White gap remains stubbornly high. Educational attainment largely drives 2nd-generation success, while residential patterns play a protective role for the 1st and 2nd generations. These findings provide critical data to set the record straight on the accomplishments of the highly successful and rising demography of Black immigrants and their US-born children.

The column touches on an interesting political fact: black immigrants and their children are more likely to vote Republican than old stock blacks. They likely contributed disproportionately to the relatively strong showing Trump had among black voters in 2024.

Some additional points in the NBER paper:

1) Black immigrants and their US-born children have exceptionally high levels of educational attainment surpassing not just those of Black natives but also US-born non-Hispanic Whites.

2) Black immigrants and their children emphasize their transnational identities to distinguish themselves from native Black people and to shield themselves from certain forms of racism and discrimination. They avoid settling in historically Black neighborhoods, and this improves their access to local public amenities (e.g. quality schools, low crime rates) and may also influence their opportunities.

3) Black immigrants and their US-born children are important comparison groups to study progress or persistence in racial inequality in the country. Their success is a testament to the opportunities that this country provides for people of all races.

4) Underlying the extraordinary performance of 2nd-generation Blacks is their exceptionally high and escalating educational attainment. Second generation black men (meaning someone with at least one parent who is an immigrant) have higher educational attainment on average than non-Hispanic white men.

5) 2nd-generation Black men and women saw the largest educational gains: each experiencing a 20-percentage point increase in proportions with bachelor’s or higher (BA+) education. By the end of the 30-year period of this study second-generation blacks were more likely to have a BA or higher degree than non-Hispanic whites. This was true of both men and women.

Some additional findings when breaking down whether the immigrants came from Africa, the Caribbean or "other" places:

Among the 1st generation, workers from Africa have the highest education levels, closely followed by those from the Caribbean, while those from ‘other’ regions have the lowest levels. While this hierarchy remains in the 2nd generation, the gap generally shrinks. This educational gradient is reflected in the earnings distributions as well, yet all three groups of 2ndgeneration Black female workers have earnings higher than or equal to nonHispanic Whites. Among men, Caribbean and African workers have earnings closer to non-Hispanic Whites, whereas Black native and 1st-generation Black men from other regions have distributions most to the left—indicating lower earnings.

It is interesting that the long historical pattern of exceptional achievement by the children of immigrants holds true for the children of recent black immigrants.

The economic performance (and growing population) of immigrant blacks and their children more than accounts for the narrowing of overall black-white earnings differentials in the past three decade. The earnings gap between old stock blacks and whites has widened.

The success of immigrant blacks and their children is a positive testimony to the fact that this country offers great opportunities regardless of race.

Its the same issue as I've mentioned many times in the past.

We subsidize immigrants over Americans to a level that is borderline insane. Its ok - Thats all about to change as REAL DATA on the impacts of immigration on the host nation are now shared openly without fear.

Highest 'education' levels.

As if that means anything anymore. Congrats on your very useful African studies degree!!! Here are some housing and food subsidies for you!

The dependent variable is income. Turns out that education is one independent variable that seems to work pretty well in explaining it.

The main point of the article is the dramatic rise in economic performances (incomes) of black immigrants and especially their children relative to non-Hispanic whites. The authors mention education because that seems to be a relevant explanatory variable. I find it impressive that the average daughter of a black immigrant is better educated and has a higher income than the average white woman. Over her lifetime she will also pay higher taxes. No flowers or thank your notes expected.

Hopefully, y'all's kids can raise their games. Otherwise, they gonna find it hard to keep up. I can understand how this can be demoralizing. A bunch of kids with parents from shithole countries come to 'merica and kick their asses both in school and the workplace. I can see how that might breed resentment.

Sure the averages of “educated” people is high. But that’s not the issue here and sadly you never acknowledge that

Eh your issue as always is treating educated people as a homogenous group and therefore bestowing praise on those “educated” that are glorious fact regurgitation machines that don’t actually earn all the much with these “skills”

But sure - when you lump in doctors and MBAs with other “educated” people it looks great and is super meaningful!

the NBER paper looks at outcomes...at the median and various deciles

over the 30 years of the study the children of black immigrants went from a deficit as far as education and income to superiority

scoreboard don't lie

Subsidizing of education coupled with artificial barriers of entry into the workforce which includes 'pats on the back' for hiring minorities does wonders I guess.

i dunno...native born blacks have the same educational subsidies and "pats on the back" but they didn't close the income gap

there is something different about immigrants and their children...has been true for over a century and applies to a variety of races and ethnicities...it is a special synergy between the opportunities provided by this country and the grit and work ethic of the first two generations
