Boston writer advocating acquiring Jason Heyward in the off season

Druw isn't a HOF because his career tanked at an early age and even if his overall body of work is worthy voters will only remember the last few years.

How valuable defense is in right is only a perception you and a few others have come up with. Turning fly balls and liners into outs and limiting doubles to singles is just as valuable in right and left as it is in center.

Except how many opportunities does Heyward really have compared to the average CFer or SS?

I don't blindly believe in them. I look at historically great defensive players (by reputation). I look at current great defensive players by reputation. These things all line up. There is a reason why Andruw and Mays are among the highest rated outfielders players by these defensive metrics. It works. I'm sorry that you can't see that.

Yes it works in the sense that you can tell (relatively) who is good, average, or bad. But you can't really compare different positions accurately. Nor do they account for any of the factors I've mentioned time and time again in this thread, which nobody has remotely addressed.

There is a reason they put in positional stats into WAR because a +10 defensive RF is not the same as a +10 defensive CF.

Harper's 21 year old season is a 113 wRC+ with below average defense and baserunning. Jason's 21 year old season was a 96 wRC+ with above average defense and baserunning. Overall pretty similar.

Harpers 21 year old season is not over and is on the upswing.

Jason's age 21 season: 2 WAR

Harper's age 21 season: 1 WAR

When GF gets his knob out of his mouth he can come back and laugh

Jason is our best player, with the possible exception of Justin, and likely will be for the foreseeable future. Has a chance to be an MVP-caliber player for several years. Would take a lot to justify trading him

Agreed, but if he doesn't sign an extension long term then you hvae to trade such a valuable asset as opposed to letting him walk for a late first round pick.
