BP Top 101 Prospects

We've given up a lot of major league talent and near-major league ready talent this off-season. The return has been a "deeper" farm system. But it has not included anyone who would be regarded as a Top 20 prospect. Foltynewicz might make the Top 50 or Top 100 of some lists. But others don't see him as good as Simms. If the idea was to have a "deeper" farm system then mission accomplished. But it is worth keeping in mind that only a very small percentage of non-elite prospects make much of an impact at the major league level. And a fair number on any Top 50 list will wash out as well.
 
Look, what we have here is we have assembled a minor league system that is deeper than the deepest mud you have ever seen, and that ain't no bull****.

Guys rise and fall constantly. This is easily the list with the least amount of Braves on it, and the guys we do have are lower than other lists as well. Prospects is a numbers game. Plenty of top-10 guys flame out fantastically while less toolsy or less heralded guys rise above them. Having a deep farm that isn't top heavy can be a really good thing. We still have plenty of very young, proven players at the MLB level. We definitely need some hitting, but I think we're in a good spot for the future.

Spot on. I think that is the largest criticism of the off season. Mortgaging the present for non elite prospects.

Not even in consideration. I am a fan, but he will have missed almost two full seasons by the time he is back and throwing meaningful innings. Think of him as a college arm that had a solid freshman year then missed his sophomore and junior seasons before getting drafted -- is that a guy you'd expect to see ranked on a list like this?

Folty was just on the outside. Peraza's write-up in the Braves Top Ten pretty much sums up the profile and I think his ranking reflects those realities. Candidate to climb.
 
I didn't expect every list to be littered with Braves. Each publication is going to look for different things and each publication will have hits and misses. I'm still not understanding what we all thought the returns were going to be for one year players.

The argument to sign them long term is another thing but if the decision was made that they weren't going to sign here long term then you have to get value for 1 year of hte player and I think the Braves did well with that.

So riddle me this...if pitching is so saturated, how were the cubbies able to pry a top 20 prospect away from the A's for it?

Russell was one that came to mind, but I didn't know if he was top 20 or not. I guess the point is it doesn't happen a whole lot. But Billy Beane going for it, is one way to get one. He doesn't mortgage often but he took his shot and failed. Lesson learned to other Gms I guess. Probably didn't help us. There was also one year left of Heyward and Upton. Not 1.5. Still time for him to be dealt again in the offseason.
 
I just don't think top prospects are going to be traded that often anymore. That Russell deal was just so strange and maybe the Royals saw something in Myers they just didn't like.

And they could have been correct. Question for the people in this forum: would you have given the Braves a top 20 prospect for Heyward or Upton or Gattis? I wouldn't and I don't think anyone else would either.

Kimbrel? I could see that, maybe for a team when that's the last piece.

What I gather from that list is its FAR from a given a top 20 prospect pans out. More tickets to the lotto I guess...

Would you have given the Braves a top 20 prospect for anyone we traded?

No, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Beane really went for it last year. I guess you can't assume this (or stupid) but dumb trades do happen.

If I was the Dodgers, just for example, I would certainly trade Pederson for Heyward.
 
Other top prospects traded over the years include Cameron Maybin, Jesus Montero, Marte, Andrus, Carlos Gonzalez, Adrian Gonzalez. There are probably more that I haven't thought of. It is not common. But not rare either.
