Brandon Taubman

I have no plans to agitate anything. What the Astros choose to do doesn't cause me to lose sleep. But, it would be nice to see them address the issue instead of trying to deflect it/cover it up.

I don't think the guy should necessarily get fired. But if I was running a business, there's no way I'd let an employee get away with that. If nothing else, it just looks bad on me and my brand.

This. It's a bit like the PR person who twittered a bunch of AIDS jokes before getting on a plane, and found out she was unemployed when the plane landed. If someone makes your company look this bad publicly, why the hell would you keep them around, much less put your own ass in a sling lying for them?

there's classy self-defense and there's thuggish self-defense

well for hiring Osuna maybe there is no classy self-defense

I'm not that informed on the Osuna case, but are we absolutely beyond the reasonable doubt standard that he did commit the crime he was accused of? As far as I know, the victim refused to testify and he pled out to a peace bond to avoid a trial or whatever.

What are the exact details of the accusation? Are we sure that this wasn't a crazy-ex story or a simple domestic dispute that was blown out of proportion?

I'm seriously asking, because I do think that this would change the framing of this situation quite a bit. If there was still some amount of doubt regarding this case, you could reasonably argue that Taubman was (poorly) trying to defend a person who he thinks is innocent. It doesn't change the fact that his method was really stupid, but it could change what his potential motives were.

But like I said, I'm not too informed on the Osuna case so its possible that his guilt is a slam dunk.

That was Justine Sacco. What was done to her was horribly unjust and is exhibit A when we talk about outrage culture going too far.

From the Astros' statement:

Our initial investigation led us to believe that Brandon Taubman’s inappropriate comments were not directed toward any reporter. We were wrong. We sincerely apologize to Stephanie Apstein, Sports Illustrated and to all individuals who witnessed this incident or were offended by the inappropriate conduct. The Astros in no way intended to minimize the issues related to domestic violence.

Our initial belief was based on witness statements about the incident. Subsequent interviews have revealed that Taubman’s inappropriate comments were, in fact, directed toward one or more reporters. Accordingly we have terminated Brandon Taubman’s employment with the Houston Astros. His conduct does not reflect the values of our organization and we believe this is the most appropriate course of action.

Should this go in the Free Speech is Under Attack thread?

cant say Luhnow is covering himself with glory with his explanations tonight...someone should stop him before he talks his way out of a job

It is so hard being a white male nowadays. If we can't even berate women verbally anymore without repercussion, what else do we have?
I haven’t heard anything about berating anyone. “Im so glad we got Osuna.” Might be gloating but it’s not berating. This whole thing makes me very angry. I don’t know much about the guy and am not an Astros fan but this SJW vigilante stuff is out of hand.

Taubman snapped because the reporter tweeted about domestic abuse whenever Osuna pitched. It's something that's been building up for a while. He's been vocal in his complaints about her work on domestic abuse. This is not something that happened in isolation.

I’m sure it did get old. Sports reporters who aren’t there to cover the game but prefer to stir up controversy. There is a lot of that these days.

yelling "I'm so glad we got Osuna. So F.ucking glad we got him!!!!" at a female reporter who has written articles about domestic violence during a celebration for no reason other than to berate and intimidate is obvious

he went out of his way to do so

this guy should have been fired the next day

and whomever put out saying the initial report was fake news should be fired too.

lol god forbid we start demanding that everyone be treated with respect in the workplace. these days are so rough! can't even target, yell at, and cuss at female reporters anymore.

you can stay in your old times, little man.

what if we do a terrible thing and create a world where there's more respect and care given to each other? wouldn't that just be awful? i don't want to live in that world. i want men to be able to do and say whatever they want, whenever they want, without having to regard other people at all.
