Braves acquire Chris Martin for Allard

I think he went off and pitched abroad. That's why the major league service time is low and the contract allows him to hit free agency before 6 years service time.

Gotcha. This would be a first for me seeing something like this.

Seems like an overpay to me from aa.

Clear that we had 40 man issues and innings issues in the upper minors. Moving allard helps with both.

If he’s got a ton of control I get it. If he’s a rental I do not.

as little value as Allard has, i doubt they give him away for a two month rental.

They just shared his story during the game. He apparently gave up on baseball due to an injury, and decided to start pitching again at a later age. Was discovered pitching in the independent league and then caught on with the Red Sox minor leagues.

At first reaction I thought this was an overpay. I went over to Fangraphs and realized they now have Allard as a 40+. Crazy how much his stock has dropped.

Okay, we have to figure out the contract situation. Its driving me crazy.

It's not a huge deal, we can always re-sign him, but he barely has much clock time in the majors. So i'm not sure how he'd enter FA after the year.

It's an overpay for a rental. But I doubt teams were valuing Allard that highly.

Allard barely has any value, getting a good BP arm is a somewhat win for AA.

Nice numbers this year, but he's been pretty awful for the rest of his careers. Still giving up a ton of home runs. Kind of betting on a guy having a career year at age 33.

He's 6'8, which is pretty cool.

His numbers have been fine for his career... xFIP of 3.28 for his career... also 1.47 BB/9 for his career.

Baseball Ref says he’s a free agent after 2023 but that’s a mistake. His unique contract signed after a Japan stint stipulates he’s a FA after this year.

Where does Martin slot in our pecking order of pen? Right now the way Snit has been managing it:

CL- Jackson
SU- Swarzak
7th- Sobotka/Newk
LOOGY - Minter/Blevins
Middle/Long - Tomlin/Walker

Who is odd person out?

Here's some more about the contract

Chris Martin signed a 2 year / $4,000,000 contract with the Texas Rangers, including $4,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $2,000,000. In 2019, Martin will earn a base salary of $2,250,000, while carrying a total salary of $2,250,000.

Further down it shows he's Arb2 eligible next year and Arb3 eligible in 2021.

It does seem like an overpay, but one that's not really worth getting upset over. It's not like Allard's value is that high and the need for bullpen help does warrant an overpay, especially when the player given up isn't a very good prospect.

But Allard was going to be one of the centerpieces for the Thor-Diaz deal.

As of now, Sobotka.

I’d bet he replaces Walker on the roster and takes Sobotka’s spot on your depth chart.
