Braves acquire garcia

So many willing to tell me I'm wrong, but not one willing to put any stakes on their opinion?

Trading Folty for an Ace to pitch during a non-contention season would be beyond foolish. I certainly hope the Braves are smarter than that.

I'd do it for Archer given hes under control longer than Sale.

I wonder if this deal is a precursor to another move?

It leaves Blair and Wisler with the prospect of being in AAA for a majority of the season barring injury..Same thing with Newcomb.

I don't like this deal at all.

What's there not to like? Let's be careful not to overvalue Gant and Ellis. Their back end starters with limited upside. Nice pieces to have but Jaime has a proven track record. He's very good when healthy. Low risk with who we have for a potentially solid mid rotation pitcher. I like it

I am going to call this one a head scratcher. I do not see how Garcia is a big upgrade over anything we have and he is only a one year deal. 3 players for him sees a bit stiff for a guy you have to pay 12M for. I guess they think they might be able to turn him for something of value at the trade deadline? I do not see this as a move that bolsters our prospects for 2017.

Maybe not much but Braves still have Newcomb, Blair, Wisler, Fried etc for depth behind the starters.

Not a huge deal, Ellis and Gant are bottom rotaion type starters.

If it's Archer it isn't just a non-contention season now is it? Or Sale for that matter.

Whether its a good idea...shrug.

What's the difference in having him or Archer? Both under control the same amount of time, and I'd prefer Archer over Folty.

Because Archer will cost a hell of a lot more than just Folty, and in 1 year Folty might be as good as Archer. And in fact, he almost produced as much WAR as Archer did last year.

If the Braves were ready to win 90+ games, then a Folty for Archer or Sale swap makes sense. Tieing up so many assets into a single player like Archer or Sale while still being a non-contender in 2017 is pure stupidity.

I was OK at Ellis/Dykstra, but Gant + eating the full $12MM leaves me with a sour taste. Garcia is an interesting gamble and he's certainly flippable, but he was putrid during the second-half and is about as brittle as they come.

Why do you care about the 12 million?

When do you think Gant was going to pitch?

This is the first move we've made this offseason that I don't like.

I don't think any of the three prospects are all that good, but I don't like the idea of giving up what could be somewhat useful pieces for an injury prone starter with only one year of control left.

I actually liked gant as a potential fastball-change up guy out of the pen with his K numbers. I know bullpen guys aren't that valuable, but how valuable is one year of an injury-prone starter in a year we aren't going to compete anyway?

I also see this as them admitting the Simmons deal was bad. If this is all Chris Ellis is worth, we should've gotten way more in return for Simmons.

Um, look at the projections for 2017 for Sale, Archer and Folty. How exactly is an increase of a couple wins going to suddenly make a 75 win team a contender?

He's left handed and a veteran who has been very good in the past and isn't so old to expect that is impossible to reclaim. But mostly he's left handed and probably better than any of the numerous fifth starter types the Braves have accumulated and are now shedding this offseason in their upper levels.

Also he's left handed.

What are everyone's thoughts on what Garcia would have gotten as a FA this year? 3 / $42m? Maybe 4 / $50m?

I think that's a different point entirely, but here is a thought: Folty has never had a great season. It's all projection. He seems a bit like a hard head and a bit of a head case, who has a weird injury history. Maybe the Braves would rathe have five years of Chris Archer than of Folty.

I don't think they are going to do that kind of deal though. But it wouldn't be crazy.

I don't think the money for Garcia is an issue as he'll probably be flipped in July anyways. We traded away 3 prospects with very little upside to get a player in a contract year that we hope to flip come July for a higher upside prospect. This is some prospect shuffling that gives the kids some time to develop and delay their service clocks. It also gives us a chance to win every 5th day.

Source confirms: #Braves get Jaime Garcia from #STLCards from prospects. Still looking at trades for potential aces, too. @markasaxon first.

This is kinda another meh deal. Both sides got 2ish WAR total in my opinion (Gant is decent but I think he's a mop-up or lackluster 5th starter). Ellis and Dykstra are complete non-factors.

How many years does Gant have his contract?

Love it! I'm not high on Gant or Ellis at all

As is the deal with the other one completed, nothing we gave up is top 10 material. Not even close in our system. We got Gants and Whalens (Parsons, Matt Withrow...yada,yada) all over the place. Remains to be seen what the youngsters look like this year, but I'm not upset about anyone we traded. (Dykstra I liked in Rome. But I never thought he was top 20 material. Single hitter). I'll miss Povse most.
