Braves Acquire Mauricio Dubon For Nick Allen

Yeah but they now control a guy with a .500 OPS. I would’ve thought Allen was a candidate for DFA, not trade currency for a really nice ML utility player. Guess they really wanted out from under the $5M.

Oh well. Nice move, AA. I must say, I like this one better than the Rockies lefty with the 7.02 ERA.
Yeah, I have to think the Stros have an internal option to replace Dubon for cheaper along with using Allen as a pinch runner and late inning defense sub on the infield.. more about shedding payroll over who they get in return.. AA probably asked them to take Allen so he didn't have to worry about 40 man roster spot.

The nice thing is that AA really didn’t give up anything for either Dubon or the pitcher from the Rockies (except the salary differential between Dubon and Allen).

Keep the tradable guys ready for a bigger addition.😉

I suppose this means Houston won't be trading Correa. He gives them a lot of flexibility being able to play SS and 3b, and likely OF if needed.

Looking at Fangraphs they have Dubon as 8 Outs above average and 6 in Fielding Runs above average........ in 206 innings at SS. Wut. Allen was at 17 OOA and 12 FRV in over 1000 innings at SS.

Doesn't that imply Dubon is a better fielder than Allen? although, I doubt Dubon would be that much better over a 1000 innings as there would be some hits for plays he couldn't make.

Dubon is a better fielder than Allen. You can't really prorate Dubon's SS output over 1000 innings and expect it to remain consistant. Just like I wouldn't say Nick Allen is a +17 SS here on out. Both are great but those numbers are likely just career year type stuff.

That being said. Dubon has won the utility gold glove 2 of the past 3 seasons and plays plus defense at almost every position on the field. Really nice addition.

yeah, that was basically what I was saying. He looks like a great pickup as long as there is some more moves to come.

It really opens up your options to use the DH to flex guys instead of locking into one guy. Weiss can rotate catchers, give infielder a day, have a fourth outfielder who actually sees some ABs once in awhile, do some platooning.

I would prefer to have someone with .900 OPS DH and tell Weiss to play the utility guy 2-3 games per week.
You got a $16M/yr all star veteran catcher and the reigning RoY, both of whom when healthy will OPS .800 and need 130-140 games. There are 162 at C. That leaves 60-80 for your unidentified .900 OPS guy if you're going to optimize your actual assets the next 4-5 years.

If you'd like to trade the $16M catcher for a .900 OPS DH I'd be okay with that. Gotta find a sucker though.

There were exactly 6 hitters in 2025 with a 900+ OPS, and a total of 18 who would have their OPS rounded up to 900 of rounded to the nearest hundred.

We may want to adjust expectations a bit with regards to how great a hitter AA will be able to acquire.

What I want are position versatile platoon hitters who could put up around a .800+ OPS vs one side. Brandon Lowe, Miguel Andujar, Mike Yasterzemski come to mind. But I know we will probably end up starting AAAA fodder to DH starters which really defeats the bonus the DH provides. God help us when injuries start.
