Braves acquire Orlando Arcia, per Rosenthal

Sobotka is Sobotka, but I’m just a tiny bit surprised they’re giving up on Weigel without ever really giving him a shot.

Either way, not a bad avenue to consolidate two fringe-40-man guys into a single less-fringy guy.

Given how impressive Tarnok and Vodnik looked during camp, they're both probably candidates to replace Sobotka and Weigel on the 40-Man Roster next season - Weigel probably wasn't going to be on the roster at any point this season with Jones, Edwards, Webb, and Bradford around anyway.

Arcia's offensive "upside" is basically a matter of him being kinda-sorta OK with the bat in 2017 and 2020 and still 26 years old. He wasn't even particularly good in the minors. Not sure how to evaluate the advanced numbers on his defense. A competent defensive shortstop who can occasionally pop a home run has some value as a bench player, but...eh.

A competent defensive shortstop who can occasionally pop a home run has some value as a bench player, and is a huge upgrade over Camargo when Adrianza returns.

FIFY

(Now just eat Ender's money and go get a 4th OF that can hit - even if only a little.)

I'll rephrase this one too...

Edwards, Arcia, and Webb would certainly be an upgrade from Sobotka, Camargo, and Newk.

Newk was a pretty terrific reliever in 2019. Hopefully we leave him as reliever from this point forward and stop trying to make him into something that he clearly isn't.

The problem - at this point anyway - is HOW MANY LHRPs can you possibly carry??? If we can get 2019 Newk I'd be more than happy to cut Dayton loose. Maybe somebody will take Dayton and another fringe 40-Man piece for a decent 4th OF.

Arcia is Camargo if Camargo:

1. Could play SS
2. Had his career year in 2020 rather than back in 2018
3. Had a less fluky career year

AA clearly thinks the arrow is pointing up on Arcia. Nothing looks overly fluky about his 2020 other than it wasn't a full season (if anything his results were a bit unlucky), so I could buy into it a bit. He's probably something like a slightly better Culberson.

It makes little sense to carry both Arcia and Adrianza though. How many SSs does a roster need?

Arcia played like a starting caliber SS in 2020, both offensively and defensively. Not a really good one, but he played like a starting caliber SS nonetheless. That's better than the back-up SS the vast majority of teams are rolling out.

Agreed. Mainly interested in anything that gets Camargo OFF THE ROSTER.

I'd carry Arcia AND Adrianza until whatever point AA is able to add OF help - if he wants to go out and sign Marisnick to replace Adrianza while sending Camargo down when standard roster construction returns, I'd be fine with that.

A-Jax, Arcia, Panda, Marisnick, Ender is a much stronger bench than A-Jax, Adrianza, Panda, Camargo, Ender would have been.

(Wouldn't mind seeing Flowers brought back too while AA's juggling things.)

For one, Newk has reverse splits over his career.

Also, Smith is the closer, so what hand he throws with is rather irrelevant. Matzek also can get hitters out from either sidem, like Newk. So we really only have Minty and Dayton as the classic "loogy" guys.

Right, but until we know more about Martin's status the only RHP I'd feel any confidence in running out there late in a game is Jones right now. Would just be nice to have a little more balance. If Martin misses much time and Edwards comes up you'll have to DFA Edwards again at some point. Not a biggy, just like having options.

Small sample size applies, but he increased his ISO while reducing his K rate for the second straight season. Certainly encouraging trends.

.176/.276/.314/.590 vs. RH hitters in 2020.

Another "plus" here is the potential flexibility added - Arcia has two years to duke it out with Dansby. If Arcia really is turning a corner, you don't need to give Dansby an expensive extension - maybe you even extend Arcia for a season or two to bridge to Shewmake.

It almost feels like the Braves are severely pissed off at Adrianza. Can't wait a week for the guy? Maybe he violated protocol carelessly or something?

Arcia's OK, I guess. Doesn't seem like a lot different player than Adrianza so I don't see the point. Wouldn't mind a LH hitting outfielder with power, of course, but this seems like rearranging deck chairs.

Career numbers are much more telling, especially for relievers.

.254/.342/.392/.734 vs RHP over his career.

Ordinarily, I would agree. Minter was a new man in 2020, and I expect those numbers to be more predictive than the career numbers.

Maybe they conceive of Arcia as the actual back-up shortstop and Adrianza as a super-utility guy who can handle shortstop in an emergency? You can have them both on the roster if you're willing to go with *gasp* 13 pitchers, but that still leaves you with the question of why you'd particularly want Adrianza on the roster anyway if he's not going to spend meaningful time at shortstop.

Two interesting things to note here. Arcia does have minor league options left. He's also set to make $2 million this year. So how are we affording this?
