Braves Acquire Russell, Bonifacio

The DFA of Schafer also frees a spot on our 40-man if we want to add someone from our minor league team later.

In some regards, I really like Jordan as a fifth outfielder. He brings a very specific skill set to the table, which I like from a bench player; better a mediocrity with one outstanding skill than a well-rounded mediocrity. Schafer's a legitimately brilliant defender and base runner (Wednesday's unacceptable botch job notwithstanding), and he really can contribute to a team with a good set of big-hitting outfielders. And if things had worked out as planned, that would be exactly what we boasted.

Still, the way he's hitting this year is completely unacceptable. You can put up with last year's 87 OPS+, but a .468 OPS is not something you can work into your roster, no matter how great the defense and base running.

I think he's a 1 skill guy, speed. I don't think he's a good defender. He takes bad angles. I think he looks good on TV b/c you see him running fast but a better defender would make the catch easily.

I really don't see what Schafer does that Kyle Wren or even Cunningham couldn't do for even less money. It would be hard to hit worse and at least Wren has some upside.

Schafer helped out a lot last year......but that was the fluke, not this year.

A blunt assessment.

Bonifacio was obviously added as a super utility guy. He's very very good in that role but can hold his own if forced to play everyday for a few weeks. The best part about this move is I can see a scenario where Bonifacio starts to take BJ's playing time. That will also give us a leadoff option.

Well, they didn't need Schafer's 40-man spot, they had three open spots, with Floyd headed to the 60-day DL, and Luis Vasquez's release, plus Dan Uggla's spot was still open, so with Schafer gone, by math that still leaves two open spots, even with Russell and Bonifacio added.

By the way, one more thought, Schafer is also the kind of guy that needs somewhat regular playing time to be effective and he wasn't going to get it. I bet if that Cubs trade hadn't been made so late before the deadline, Wren would have tried to trade him. Jordan will catch on with someone else.

I know, but I still counted 39 after all those moves. If you recall, Shreve took Uggla's open roster spot when his contract was selected from AA (Uggla was released the day before opening a spot for Shreve according to Braves.com transactions section).

You're right I forgot about Shreve taking Uggla's spot. So let's just say, Russell takes Floyd's spot and Bonifacio takes Schafer's spot, you're right Vasquez's spot is still open, so yes, 1 spot open.

Well, I was hoping I was wrong and you were right because the more open spots the better. I watch a lot of our minor league games and have been hoping to see a few of the kids I like down there added for Sept. call-ups if not sooner. The more spots open the better for that to happen of course.

He probably will, provided he hasn't burned too many . . . bridges.

I could see him catching on somewhere if he hadn't mysteriously forgotten how to hit

By the way, Bonifacio in the lineup tonight wearing #1 and hitting 8th, not leadoff, but 8th. Russell will wear #51

Wow, Fredi never learns. Only an idiot hits him 8th given his numbers vs the opposing pitcher and lefties in general. Plus on a single he is less likely to be able to steal a base too. But it is even worse considering who is hitting first and getting the most AB's for us. Same old crap and if it keeps up too long we will miss the playoffs entirely. I don't see us making the playoffs at all if BJ stays our leadoff man a while longer.

where's he playing, LF? Justin in RF?

Probably RF as Fredi doesn't like moving Justin at all. That's why Doumit plays RF even though he is terrible there. Doumit is actually much better in LF from what I've seen this year. Which makes sense as usually that is the place for your worst outfielders.
