Braves claim Pedro Beato

Glad it had nothing to do with Walden not coming out in the 8th.

Glad that Walden is apparently OK too, but not happy about Fredi's track record with whom he deems Mr. 8th inning. I am with nsacpi on what Fredi needs to start doing to manage our relievers innings this year.

It made no sense NOT to use Walden. He warmed up. He's better than Carpenter when healthy. Carpenter gave up a run the day before. Use him.

Plus, Walden could probably have used the work. He's going to be going on like a week of no activity if he even pitches Friday.

In fact, isn't Walden the only member of our pen that hasn't gotten any innings this season?

Varvaro also hasn't pitched.

Varvaro hasn't pitched, nor Buchter before his demotion. But Walden is the only really good option not to be used. Varvaro had a terrible spring (and his velocity has been down from last year), so no surprise on not using him this early.

That said, like y'all I was hoping to see Walden after he warmed up. But I know how Fredi can be when he deems someone Mr. 8th inning (and if that's the case with Carpenter then it would fit Fredi's track record).

I forgot he was even on the team.

I doubt he lasts the year with us once our rotation and bullpen is healthy (barring further injury and Venters returning OK). I also don't see him pitching as well this year as last.

The Braves are apparently hoping to get back to carrying three lefties in the bullpen at some point. They signed lefty reliever Luis Perez with plans to add him to the bullpen once ready too. So at some point that would mean Avilan, Venters and Perez in our bullpen if both Venters and Perez make it back OK. That will likely mean Thomas back to AAA to start again and Varvaro could be the other bullpen arm to go.

Luis Perez has been a good LOOGY at the major league level (56 strikeouts versus 11 walks in his career against righties). It remains to be seen if he gets back to that level but he could be a potentially valuable part of the pen.

I hate this thread. I was deathly tired when I saw the title and read it as "Braves Claim Prado". :Wall:

True, it does. But the Braves apparently signed him with that hope in mind. If he does I expect they'll carry three lefties in the pen again. They may either way if Thomas pitches so well they don't want to send him to AAA. Which is also certainly possible. However, I would like to see Thomas get a shot at starting at some point too. I liked what I saw in his minor league starts.

Are you talking about Buchter or Beato who we just added? I wasn't saying Beato had a history of control problems. I was talking about Buchter who we just sent down. As far as I know Beato control is okay. Nothing special but okay, IIRC he throws a 92-94 mph fastball and slider combo. But I haven't payed attention to him much outside of his time with the Mets. He did well in AAA last year and pitched a little with Red Sox last year.

I was talking about Beato. The reason he has bounced around is because of his lack of control. But I have no problem with a team taking chances on guys like this because sometimes they eventually figure it out and become lights out. If he does then we cut him loose and it's no biggie.

Yeah that was a complete head stratcher of a move. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

OK, I understand he had some command and control issues at one time. I just thought that was in the past given he only walked one batter this spring (and only walked two in the bigs with Boston last year) while putting up decent AAA numbers. But as I said, I haven't followed him really since his days with the Mets. Still, I didn't recall his main issue as being control. I just didn't think he was very good.

That said, I am fine with the pick-up since we needed someone to replace Buchter who was only on the roster due to Gearrin's injury.
