Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Interview with Hart after Upton trade. A lot of interesting stuff, but here's one of the more newsy items:

"It was a depth trade. It really helped our system. It might help us short term with Jace Peterson. As we go forward, we picked up what we think are four really good players. In addition, we gained a little more of the international money. We've signed eight guys already with the [$800,000 received via a trade with the Cubs in November]. We've got three more guys we want to get and we were running short on cash. I think this will help us."

This is actually the Braves Way. Trade your quality for quantity and try to make the playoffs with whatever mediocre/solid players that come from that. Winning it all isn't the goal or we would of found a way to keep our best hitter and our best player no matter the financial cost.

Reminds me of the lesson we all learned in Wrath of Khan, that many are guilty of two dimensional thinking (see this board). Others can think and strategize in three dimensions (Kirk, Hart). How many of you ranting looneys even considered the Int'l money?

I want Moncada as much as the next guy, but we have to realize it's unlikely. We will probably be outbid if we even make a run at him.

Hart's quote seems to indicate that we're managing to the international budget and not planning to exceed the max. Now, I think they'd be okay exceeding the max if they could get Moncada, but this indicates that they are not assuming that's how this will end up.

I doubt very many since that came out late as did the name of the player (Aaron Northcraft) sent along with Justin in the trade. The reports all said Justin Upton and a low level prospect before hand.

My thoughts exactly. Well said.

Hart says they will look at the pen & rotation. “We’ll look at both free agents & have ongoing trade talks. We’re not finished” #Braves

Meh, just looked at FA's, not much realistically speaking interests me.

I'd consider bringing back Soriano and try to flip him at the deadline.

Yeah i doubt it happens too, one of the big markets probably gets him.

But reading on it, seems our scouts love him.

Even the Padres scored 500+ runs last year. As bad as people are making things out to be we won't score less than 500 runs. That's over 3 runs a game. A 2-1 win is just as valuable as a 10-4 win.

Except they aren't equal over a full season. One gives the top guys in the bullpen a rest and perhaps saves the starter an inning. The other will destroy the top guys in the bullpen by September along with a starter or two.

Melvin plus 15M for Edwin Jackson. Gets us a fifth starter. Frees up 16m of payroll for 2017.

I think I'd rather have Upton because I think the Braves will develop plenty of options for the back of the rotation for the next five years. Roll the dice with him for another year or two and eveyr year the contract becomes more tradeable.

Fair, they have money so why not spend it?
