Braves extend Acuña with 8 year deal

Given how team-friendly the Acuna deal is, I wouldn't be surprised to see another 2-3 years tacked onto Freeman's deal at (or close to) his current salary. Does that push him a little further than some folks prefer to go? Sure, but it would line up perfectly with Goldschmidt's extension from St. Louis - taking Freddie through to roughly the same age.

If Freeman is extended I think it will be less than what most would expect it to be for. He seems to have that Chipper vibe.

Nothing reported yet.

I’m not sure folks appreciate just how much extra value those 2 option years are, and how bad it was for Acuna’s agent to give them up.

Acuna must really love Atlanta.

I think this is unfair.

This is a big issue with salaries versus players and teams. This is not a lot of money for the Braves. This is life changing money for Acuna.

Yes he could get more money going year to year. He could also get hurt and/or not perform. Guaranteeing 100 million for any person is family tree altering money. And he can still get a second deal. And he can still get endorsements. Etc. Etc.

I said this year's ago and was told it wouldn't happen. I wanted to sign Swanson, Albies and Acuna to 10/100 million paying 10 per. Acuna obviously got more than that now, but he also had a ROY since i put that forward.

IF you are a team you put a big number out there and you make them turn you down. As much as you are confident as an athlete, it's hard to turn down that kind of cash.

Maybe a little less - $22 million per for three years for Freddie would more or less mirror the Goldschmidt deal though.

While I agree he has that Chipper-like feel, that deal may have set the floor. Freddie could save face with the Union by saying he's getting paid as long as Goldschmidt even though the Braves wouldn't commit an extra 5 years - the shorter term would be his team-friendly commitment at that point.

Anyone know what his expected arbitration earnings would have been if he produced as 4-6 win player?

Bc ultimately the extension is the 5 years after that point, right?

First of all, offering 10/100 to Albies or Swanson is lunacy. Neither of them would command anywhere near that much to extend.

Secondly, Acuna very clearly left a lot of cash on the table with those 2 extensions. Yes, he is now filthy rich, and that’s awesome for him. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the Braves got tremendous value with the inclusion of those options, and it has nothing to do with not going year to year.

He would have 4 arb years since he is likely to be a Super 2. Lets say he is a 4 win player. Market price for a 4 wins player is around 32M. His arb years would be roughly 7M, 13M, 18M, 23M.

The extension is after the 2 pre-arb years (2019-2020) and the 4 arb years (2021-24). So it buys out 4 years of free agency (assuming the options are exercised).

His potential arb earnings were already detailed several times in the extending Acuna thread.

I'm not surprised Acuna took an extension, he's never made any real kind of money. I'm surprised he gave up, i think it if all the options are picked up, 4 FA years?

I was hoping we'd get 1-2 FA years picked up, this is as good of an extension as there has been given out so far. Kudos to AA.

I'm not surprised he took an extension either. But I am surprised (and very happy) he took THAT extension. I wonder if the union is in touch with his agent. Or will try to get him decertified!

The deal probably breaks down roughly as follows:

2019 (21): $560k (pre-arb 2, no signing bonus reported)
2020 (22): $1M (pre-arb 3)
2021 (23): $5M (arb 1)
2022 (24): $9M (arb 2)
2023 (25): $13M (arb 3)
2024 (26): $17M (arb 4)
2025 (27): $23M (FA 1)
2026 (28): $23M (FA 2)
2027 (29): $17M option, $10M buyout (FA 3)
2028 (30): $17M option, $10M buyout (FA 4)

I can't believe Acuna gave up 2 option years at the end of this deal, but it's great news for the Braves.

Acuna may now be the most valuable asset in all of MLB.

Can make a case it's the best contract in baseball if Acuna pans out like everyone seems to think he will.

That knee injury last year must have given him second thoughts. Take the money when it's there in front of you. But wow, if Acuna is the player everyone thinks he is, that's one of the best contracts in the game.

Acuna must really love the Braves.
