Braves extend Acuña with 8 year deal

It’s what people take when they can’t major in something that requires actual intelligence.

Best of luck running a tire sales team in a few years. Now off you go. Run along and show D1 daddy how well you “know athletes”.

You are so smart about baseball but so dumb about some things. It is humorous.

Seems like that dude was in a bit over his head in these negotiations.

Is this the same guy who only got Acuna $100k to sign?

I suspect Ronald's dad handled things when he was 16. But who knows. I wonder if Alex Salazar has any other clients.

I'm excited to see us start extenting young talent again. And I'm super stoked to see what contract we sign a FA to that we have to bundle Acuna with in order to unload

I mean...damn.

I almost feel bad for Acuna. Almost.

I wonder if we hear something about someone being mislead about what exactly he was agreeing to.

The 2 options at the end are truly that bad...err good for the Braves.

Pure speculation, but the options tacked on to the end of this deal are so out of place compared to the rest of the contract and every other extension signed the last 2-3 years that they seem to be tacked on specifically to get the extra $10M required to push the guarantee to the $100M mark.

The rest of the extension (8/90) is perfectly in line with everything else we know about player contract value, then bam, those 2 options come out of nowhere and make it a huge win for the Braves. Even the terms of the options are odd...$17M with a $10M buyout. I can’t remember seeing an option before where the buyout is such a huge percentage of the option price.

Every informed take I’ve seen on this extension agrees that those options were tacked on just to make the contract reach the $100M mark.

I just assumed that each 17m option had a 5m buyout.

While Acuna could have earned more by taking on risk, it’s fair to point out he’s a guy five years away from FA, with a half season in the majors that just got a 100m guarantee.

It’s a great deal for Braves, but not at all one that’s without risk. Stars sometimes fizzle.

Some players are motivated by the dollar amount (see Harper), others prioritize things like security or playing where they want over the total dollar amount (see Chipper). Who's to say one is right?
