BRAVES FINAL DRAFT SIGNING BOARD: Backstrom on board!

DOB says we’ve agreed to terms with our top 10 round picks “among others.” Which is pretty unhelpful.

It’s by no means definitive, but this write-up from Webber University’s website certainly makes it sound as if the program/coach thinks thirty-fourth-rounder Willie Carter is going to sign:

Webber's Head Baseball Coach Brad Niethammer said, "I'm really happy for Willie [Carter] on his selection in this year's MLB draft and his opportunity to play professional baseball. He had a big year for us and will do well at the next level."

He’s an intriguing power bat.

DOB reports "Braves have signed all of their choices through 10 rounds, among others." Starting to sound like a major slam for Brown on his rookie draft.

It's going to be very interesting to follow the careers of the four college shortstops taken at picks 14 (Stutts), 15 (Wilson), 21 (Shewmake), 22 (Jones) and Davidson (29). There was a lot of depth at the position this year. As a rule, I like drafting players who play at positions considered the strength of the draft.

Which of the five you listed are you not planning to follow?

Certainly also highly non-definitive, but Mahki Backstrom has been retweeting a lot of “Welcome to the Braves” and “#ChopOn” messages. At the very least, that’s not a bad sign.

1B Bryce Ball did an interview for his Twitter account and said Braves changed his mind about returning to college (Dallas Baptist) despite being a 24th round pick. Chalk up another for what is looking like a huge draft class.

Tampa Bay took Jones one pick after Shewmake. There were several college shortstops who seem to have graded out very similarly. I wonder if the Braves saw them all as very close and went with the one who gave them a discount.

Word is Shewmake was going off the board to the rays at 22 if we didn’t nab him at 21. I’m all for the shewmake pick if an org like the rays valued him this highly too.

Going to be fun following all the Shortstops.

Atlanta signing 39 players, lol

I am now convinced he’s signing and will personally blame you for my disappointment if he does not.

I wonder how much the “advisors” to these amateur players know about the bonuses to which signed players have agreed, versus how much a team like the Braves can tactically delay the release of that information to maintain one more slice of leverage.

Hopefully it's the same guy that "advised" Albies

Wow, Callis says Shewmake got slot at 21. $3.1 million.

That’s a bit surprising, but also further explains the left-field Phillip pick; I’d have to assume the latter is somewhat significantly underslot.
